About this video

When caught in top half guard and the opponent secures an underhook, immediate action is required to prevent losing position or being swept. The following steps outline the process to counter and pass the guard:

  1. Post on the elbow opposite the underhook and trap the opponent's wrist with the free hand.
  2. Feed the trapped hand through to the underhook side and gain control over the opponent's arm.
  3. Remove the initial hand from the wrist and post it on the mat, shifting weight forward to collapse the opponent's posting elbow.
  4. Execute a back step, lowering the head below the opponent's to gain a positional advantage.
  5. Secure the inside of the opponent's pant leg or push on their knee, depending on whether it's gi or no-gi.
  6. Insert the shin of the free leg inside the opponent's leg, stretching it away while bringing the trapped knee towards the chest.
  7. Maintain chest pressure and control of the arm throughout the movement.
  8. Once the leg is free, turn towards the opponent to establish side control, applying pressure and securing the position.

This technique effectively counters the underhook from top half guard, allowing for a guard pass and transition to a dominant side control position.
