About this video

Counter the deep half guard by securing an underhook and controlling the opponent's arm:

  1. As the opponent enters deep half guard, immediately seek an underhook on the arm closest to their body.
  2. Drive the knee that's not trapped under the opponent's head as far as possible, sitting to the hip on that side.
  3. Pull the opponent towards the trapped leg to free the leg that's under their shoulders and head.
  4. Once the leg is free, roll back to the original position and hug the freed leg tight under the opponent's armpit to isolate their arm.
  5. Switch arms, bringing the free arm underneath the opponent's armpit and the original underhooking arm out to grab their wrist.
  6. Secure a Kimura grip by grabbing your own wrist with the hand that was originally underhooking.
  7. Attempt to finish the Kimura from this position, or if the opponent opens their legs to bridge, transition into a triangle while still chasing the Kimura.

This approach prevents the opponent from controlling your balance and sets up a submission opportunity.
