About this video

Escaping the omoplata while maintaining top position is crucial, especially in a tournament setting where being rolled can cost points. To prevent being rolled and to counter the omoplata:
  1. Place the tip of your inside knee on the opponent's stomach to keep them from sitting up and applying pressure on your shoulder blade.
  2. Keep your opposite leg's toes on the ground and your thumbs up for balance.
  3. Ensure your head is not too close to the opponent's legs to avoid a triangle; use your head to pulse against the leg if necessary.
  4. Look up and place your outside hand on the opponent's gi pants where the string is, keeping your elbow close to your body.
  5. Stand up straight, as if standing up inside someone's closed guard, and extend your inside arm.
  6. Pull your arm out as you stand, which will release the pressure on your shoulder and allow you to escape the omoplata.
  7. After escaping, proceed to pass the opponent's guard.
It's important to prevent the opponent from sitting up by using the knee in their stomach and to stand up straight to extend their body, which alleviates the pressure on your shoulder and facilitates the escape.
