About this video

Escaping a choke from back control when on the bad side:
  1. Avoid reaching inside and trying to pull the arm down as it can worsen the choke.
  2. Use the far hand to grab the sleeve with a one-inch fold and keep the elbow tight to your body.
  3. Place the other hand above the opponent's elbow to apply pressure and prevent the choke.
  4. To release the bottom hook, either extend the leg and turn the hip to step out or, as a last resort, release the top hand to reach the opponent's heel.
  5. If reaching the heel is difficult, bring your leg up to bring the heel closer.
  6. Keep the heel in place and move your hip around it to free your foot.
  7. Once the foot is free, return the hand to above the opponent's elbow to regain control.
  8. If the opponent attempts to transition to mount or side control, trap the top leg with your inside leg.
  9. Use your arm to peel their arm off your back and recover half guard.
  10. Be proactive and precise in your movements to successfully escape the back control.
