About this video
Escaping the triangle choke at an early stage involves maintaining posture and preventing the opponent from securing a deeper lock. The following steps outline the escape process:
- Recognize the early stage of the triangle where one arm is out and the other is in, with your posture still high and your elbow open.
- Keep your head up and your elbow open to prevent the opponent from closing the triangle.
- Place both hands on the opponent's chest to keep them from reaching your head and pulling you down into a tighter triangle.
- Walk your knees forward to close the distance and then sit back on your right heel, making your body long and difficult to control.
- Engage in a "head fight" by keeping your head up and preventing the opponent from sitting up or pulling your head down.
- Shift your shoulder that's under the opponent's knee backwards to create space and potentially pop the triangle open.
- If you're unable to open the triangle, use the created space to bring your hand back inside and reset to a closed guard position, ensuring your safety.
- Avoid leaning forward or doing anything that would put you deeper into the triangle choke.
Throughout the escape, it's crucial to maintain a strong posture, keep the head up, and control the opponent's chest to prevent them from completing the submission.
