About this video
Escaping the belly-down armbar involves several critical steps to prevent the submission and regain a dominant position:
- When the opponent wraps the arm and pushes the head down to extend the arm, immediately try to reach the collar with the attacked arm.
- If the arm is stretched too far from the collar, cup the inner thigh with the free hand and keep the knee close to the opponent to secure weight and prevent further extension.
- To free the head from the opponent's foot trapping it, use the free hand to hold the opponent's toes. Instead of pushing the foot away, move the head around the foot to free it.
- After freeing the head, post the hand on the mat and prepare to jump over the opponent's body. Avoid the common mistake of landing on the back, which can lead to being caught in the armbar again.
- Jump over the opponent's body one leg at a time, ensuring to land on the knees with hips facing down. This movement should be done quickly and with control to prevent the opponent from re-establishing the armbar.
- Once the jump is completed and the position is secured, control the opponent's hand to prevent them from attacking the arm again.
Executing these steps correctly will allow for an escape from the belly-down armbar and the opportunity to transition to a more advantageous position.
