About this video
Maintaining hip connection to the opponent's hip is crucial for control. When the opponent attempts a forward roll to prevent back control, follow them into a leg drag position. If they push away, keep the position tight and use grips on their lapel to pull yourself in, driving with your toes.
For a submission option, if a head and arm choke isn't viable due to fatigue or preference, use the opponent's gi for an Ezekiel choke. Open the gi with your free hand, taking your time to get enough material to pass to your other hand, palm down, but not too tight to allow space for your hand to come through.
Place your palm on the opponent's shoulder as a placeholder, then use the grip to pull down and sit up, changing your angle. This allows your hand to go deeper for the choke. Make a fist and pull down while punching into the opponent's neck to finish the Ezekiel choke.
If the opponent rolls into you trying to defend, you can take their back by bringing your knee up and placing your foot over. If they stay on their side, secure extra control with a hook and finish the choke from there. Be patient and ensure your wrist doesn't bend to maintain the effectiveness of the choke.
This modified Ezekiel choke is advantageous because it doesn't require your own sleeve, offers more material for a stronger grip, and reduces the likelihood of losing the choke.
