About this video

Attaching the hip to the opponent's hip is essential for control and the ability to follow their movements. Progressing the position involves getting hooks in, but this requires a strategic approach to penetrate the opponent's defenses.

  1. Establish hip attachment to follow the opponent effectively.
  2. Use grips to aid in penetration; for no-gi, cup the shoulder and hip, while in gi, utilize the material for grips.
  3. Choose the side to enter based on the grip; the knee on the same side as the shoulder grip enters first.
  4. Penetrate the space between the opponent's elbow and hip with the knee, ensuring it's deep and not shallow.
  5. Maintain a perpendicular angle to the opponent for proper alignment.
  6. Use grips to pull yourself in tightly, ensuring the opponent's ribs and chest are close to your thigh and hip.
  7. Stay on your toes for better connection and the ability to drive into the opponent.
  8. Repeat the knee penetration on both sides, adjusting grips as necessary for the gi.
  9. Keep the elbow tight when using the gi grip, and ensure the knee is inserted deeply behind the opponent's elbow.

Practicing this knee penetration technique will facilitate easier insertion of hooks and improve positional control.
