About this video
Executing a D'Arce choke after sprawling on a double leg takedown:
- When your opponent attempts a double leg takedown, sprawl effectively to force them into the turtle position.
- Instead of diving under and risking a reversal, opt for a headlock grip on the side you prefer for the D'Arce choke.
- Clasp your hands together, with the choking arm threading through under their armpit to the opposite side, grabbing right above their elbow.
- Use this grip to apply a choking pressure even as you roll, giving you an advantage when finishing the choke.
- Roll underneath your opponent, using the grip to guide you and beat them to the corner turn.
- As you come on top, ensure your choking arm (the one that was clasped) goes through all the way to grab your own bicep.
- Place your free hand on their shoulder, not too far, as you only need to close your elbow and squeeze to tighten the choke.
- Finish the choke by squeezing your elbows together and applying pressure with your head on the mat if necessary.
This technique allows you to secure a D'Arce choke from a sprawl without giving up position, and the initial headlock grip can act as a choke during the roll, setting up a tight finish.
