About this video

Defending against the Sao Paulo pass from closed guard involves a series of movements to control the opponent and set up a potential choke. Begin by pulling the opponent's elbows out and dragging your knees to your chest to establish a clinch position. As you open your guard and the opponent sits to the hip to push your leg down, control their wrist and move your hip away.

  1. Feed the controlled arm through to the back and hook it with your foot.
  2. Straighten out your body and kick your leg away to push the opponent away.
  3. Grab the arm closest to you, controlling the wrist and elbow, and apply pressure to force the opponent towards a belly-down position.
  4. Grab their far arm and look to underhook right at their neck.
  5. Free the leg that was hooking their arm and move to a position where you can immediately start to apply a choke.
  6. If the opponent turns away to relieve shoulder pressure, continue to pull them towards you and secure an underhook beneath their chin.
  7. Transition to a back control position with both hooks in to score points or finish with a choke.

This sequence not only defends against the Sao Paulo pass but also creates opportunities to control and submit the opponent.
