About this video
Defending against the Sao Paulo pass from closed guard involves a series of movements to control the opponent and set up a potential choke. Begin by pulling the opponent's elbows out and dragging your knees to your chest to establish a clinch position. As you open your guard and the opponent sits to the hip to push your leg down, control their wrist and move your hip away.
- Feed the controlled arm through to the back and hook it with your foot.
- Straighten out your body and kick your leg away to push the opponent away.
- Grab the arm closest to you, controlling the wrist and elbow, and apply pressure to force the opponent towards a belly-down position.
- Grab their far arm and look to underhook right at their neck.
- Free the leg that was hooking their arm and move to a position where you can immediately start to apply a choke.
- If the opponent turns away to relieve shoulder pressure, continue to pull them towards you and secure an underhook beneath their chin.
- Transition to a back control position with both hooks in to score points or finish with a choke.
This sequence not only defends against the Sao Paulo pass but also creates opportunities to control and submit the opponent.
