About this video

When facing an opponent who stiff-arms at the waist, making it difficult to break their posture, a different approach is required. Instead of pulling the arms and bringing knees to the chest, the following technique can be applied:

  1. Keep the grip on the opponent's elbows and open the guard, placing feet on their hips.
  2. Attempt to push the opponent's elbows together, with knees on the outside of the hands.
  3. Decide which hand will be on top and crisscross the opponent's arms by pushing.
  4. Kick the foot opposite of the arm that is on top of the opponent's arm away, pulling them down into position.
  5. Hook the side of the opponent's body with the corresponding leg and underhook their elbow with the arm.
  6. Grab their shoulder with the hand, securing a tight position for an armbar, with hips off the mat.
  7. If the opponent postures up to defend the armbar, maintain the grip over their wrist.
  8. Grab the middle of their gi with the free hand, pull them towards you, and straighten legs to push them away.
  9. Insert one hook and then the second, establishing a backpack grip with an over-under control.

This sequence offers a transition from an armbar attempt to taking the back when the opponent resists by posturing up.
