About this video

Counter the opponent's defense in a sweep attempt by securing a grip on their ankle and maintaining control of their neck to execute a reversal:

  1. Start with the opponent's hand pressing down and your knees pulled to your chest, similar to the initial sweep setup.
  2. Place one hand across the back of their neck, clenching it, while bringing your other arm towards your waist.
  3. Open your closed guard and bridge to your side, securing a grip on the inside of the pant leg you're targeting.
  4. Begin to invert, and as the opponent lifts their foot in response, grab their ankle as low as possible to achieve the correct angle for the sweep.
  5. Keep the grip on the back of their neck, folding them towards you, and continue the sweeping motion with the leg that was across their waist.
  6. Finish the movement typically in the mount position, ready to transition to triangles or arm locks.
  7. Ensure you maintain the clinch on the back of their head, keeping a tight seal with your chest to their head throughout the movement.
  8. As you pendulum your leg, aim to bring your head towards your knee and immediately stand up on the side you're sweeping to.
  9. Instead of reaching for the hamstring or knee, pull yourself as low as possible to their ankle for a better sweeping angle.
  10. While still holding the neck clinch, fold the opponent in half and kick out to complete the sweep, landing in mount and setting up for subsequent attacks like triangle chokes or arm locks.
