About this video
Executing an armlock when the opponent attempts to disengage from a closed guard involves a series of coordinated movements to maintain connection and control. As the opponent starts to move away upon the opening of the closed guard, this movement can be used to transition into the desired hip position. The following steps outline the technique:
- Start by pulling the opponent's elbows out and bringing your knees to your chest to establish a tight clinch position.
- Open your closed guard, and as the opponent moves away, use their motion to help turn to the right side.
- Place the left foot on the mat (corresponding to the arm that was clinching behind the opponent's head) and set up a bridge.
- Pull the right knee down to maintain connection. If the opponent tries to run away, hook their far leg with the top of your foot to keep them close.
- Bring your upper body closer to the opponent to minimize space.
- With the free leg (the one you bridged on), kick up tightly and simultaneously pull your arm out while pinching your knees together.
- Secure the opponent's elbow to prevent them from rotating their arm down and finish the armbar by bringing your hips forward.
This technique ensures that even if the opponent tries to escape by running away, you can maintain control and successfully execute the armlock.
