About this video

When the opponent is holding tight in the closed guard, use elbows out and knees to the chest to create space. As they cling on, push their head across the body and slip the arm underneath their armpit, avoiding the guillotine setup.

  1. With the arm under the opponent's armpit, join hands together to lift their arm and create discomfort, without neck cranking.
  2. Open the closed guard and insert a butterfly hook on the same side as the arm that went under the armpit.
  3. Lift the opponent using the butterfly hook and turn the hips to sweep them over.
  4. Release the hands to move into a mounted position, maintaining the underhook.
  5. Keep the clinch and push the opponent's head across while making an underhook on the far side.
  6. Join palms together and lift while opening the closed guard to insert the butterfly hook.
  7. Turn the opponent over by lifting and opening the hands, which allows for pushing up and clearing the hook to achieve mount.
