About this video

Executing an armbar when the opponent attempts to stand up from your closed guard involves a series of strategic grips and movements:

  1. Anticipate the opponent's intention to stand and break your guard. Begin by pulling their elbows out and bringing your knees to your chest to maintain a clinching position.
  2. Switch your grip from the back of their neck to their belt. To access the belt, grab the back of their knee and lift, which will raise the belt. Secure both loops of the belt with your hand, including the thumb for the best grip.
  3. Open your guard and prepare to move as the opponent postures up. Shift to your elbow on the side you're turning towards to lift your hips off the mat.
  4. Place the foot corresponding to the belt-gripping hand on the mat and bridge your hips up. Swing this foot to the outside of their leg and fall back to your shoulder, cutting an angle and dragging their shoulder down to break their posture.
  5. Grab the inside of their pant leg near the knee. Move the bridging foot away from them, pull on the belt and pant leg, and drive your heel towards the mat to further break their posture.
  6. Immediately transition by releasing the belt and placing your hand in front of their face to grab the far side lapel. This sets you up to attack their arm.
  7. Execute the armbar by looping your leg over their head and controlling the pant leg. Pull your arm towards your waist to finish the submission, ensuring they cannot turn back to their knees.

This technique effectively counters an opponent's attempt to stand and pass your guard, leading to a submission opportunity.
