About this video

Introducing a variation of the cross guard position that offers a more aggressive approach and creates distance to prevent the opponent from smashing. This technique is particularly useful when wanting to keep the opponent at bay, make them stand, or move to avoid immediate passing attempts.

  1. Start with the basic entry of breaking the opponent's grip, sitting up, and popping off as you return your back to the mat, switching the grip accordingly.
  2. Turn outwards, bringing your knee to your chest, and place your foot into the opponent's armpit.
  3. Extend your leg while keeping the opponent on their knees for practice purposes, though in a live situation they may stand up.
  4. This position leads to further attacks when the opponent stands and helps to off-balance them due to the increased leverage.
  5. Practice this drill on both sides to gain proficiency.
  6. Ensure your knee stays close to your chest to prevent the opponent from advancing and placing their knee on you.
  7. Maintain a stiff leg when extending to make it more difficult for the opponent to pop your foot out.

This cross guard variation enhances control and creates opportunities for attacks by using the leverage of the foot in the armpit to manipulate the opponent's body.
