About this video

When setting up an armbar, sometimes the cross grip can be inconvenient. An alternative grip allows for a more effective armbar setup. Here's how to execute it:

  1. Start with a two-on-one grip and break your opponent's grip.
  2. Pull their arm under and switch the grip from one hand to the other, freeing your hand.
  3. With the free hand, grab the opponent's arm to control it for the armbar.
  4. If the armbar angle isn't right or you need points, you can transition into a basic sweep.
  5. Execute the sweep to end up in the mount position, which can score 2 to 4 points.
  6. For the armbar, use the leg and armpit control, specifically Kesa-Gatame, to cut into the opponent's hip.
  7. Bring your heel down and tuck your foot as you come up for the armbar.
  8. If you prefer to score points, you can complete the sweep to mount, depending on your position relative to your opponent.

This technique provides options for both submission and positional advancement, offering versatility in your attack strategy.
