Executing the Bread Cutter Choke from side control:
- Start in side control and set up the windshield wiper position on the opponent's arm by taking the knee off the belly, sliding to staple the wrist, and switching the hips to base.
- Open up the opponent's lapel and pass it under their arm. Take your time to tighten the grip, pulling as much material as possible to the armpit and across to the other side.
- Grab the lapel low to pull more material and use your other hand to assist in feeding the lapel, ensuring it's tight to the armpit before sliding down.
- Feed the lapel to your other hand, which is palm up, and slide it down while maintaining tightness to the body and keeping the elbow close.
- Instead of sliding into the gi, slide the grip straight across, turning your shoulder to pass the grip deeper.
- While pulling the material towards you, get a palm-up grip as deep as possible without bending your wrist, curling it towards you and lifting the opponent's head.
- Grab the opposite lapel with a thumb-in grip, or use a four-finger monkey grip if it's too tight. Dropping your elbow will help finish the choke.
- Maintain pressure on the opponent's chest and face your chest towards their head to ensure there's no room for escape.
- Use your shin to control the opponent's arm and your shoulder to apply pressure on their ribcage, enhancing the choke's effectiveness.
- Complete the choke by dropping the elbow of the arm with the thumb-in grip and pulling towards you.
This technique provides a tight choke by utilizing the gi lapel and maintaining strong control over the opponent's posture and position.
