Outside Heel Hook vs. Inside Heel Hook: Key Differences
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · Control the hip line first—your legs must immobilize the opponent's hip to prevent them from turning with the rotation and relieving pressure.
- · The heel must be extracted from the opponent's hip crease and secured tightly against your chest/sternum with a blade-grip before applying any rotation.
- · Rotational force comes from turning your entire body (back-stepping or bridging) rather than cranking with the arms alone.
- · Pinch your knees together to create a fulcrum below the opponent's knee, isolating the lower leg for maximum torque transmission.
- · Anticipate the boot (foot retraction) defense by maintaining constant wrist-to-heel connection and keeping elbows tight to your torso.
Execution
- 1 From your controlling position (outside ashi, backside 50-50, or cross ashi), establish a figure-four or S-grip around the opponent's heel with your wrist blade seated directly under the Achilles tendon.
- 2 Clamp the captured foot tightly to your chest, ensuring the heel is pulled past your centerline and secured against your sternum.
- 3 Pinch your knees together firmly around the opponent's lower leg just below the knee to create the fulcrum point.
- 4 Rotate your upper body away from the opponent (toward the pinky-toe side of their trapped foot) using a bridging or hip-escape motion to apply lateral rotational force on the knee.
- 5 Apply the finish slowly and progressively—the knee's lateral structures can fail suddenly with minimal warning.
Common mistakes
- × Cranking the heel with arm strength alone instead of rotating the torso, which reduces power and allows the opponent time to escape or counter-rotate.
- × Failing to control the opponent's hip with your legs, allowing them to spin in the direction of the torque and completely nullify the submission.
- × Gripping too high on the foot near the toes instead of cupping deep under the heel, which shifts force to the ankle rather than the knee and makes the grip easy to strip.
