Heel Hook Defense
Escape
No-Gi
Surviving heel hook attacks: hide the heel, control the rotation, and clear the knee line before the attacker finishes their grip. Modern defense is early — hand-fighting the attacker's hands and freeing the knee — because rolling out of a locked heel hook risks the ligaments.
Quick Reference
Key principles
- · No heel exposure, no heel hook — turn the toes away and hide the heel ('put the boot on')
- · Damage comes from rotation against a controlled knee line — clearing the knee past the attacker's midline ends the threat
- · Follow the rotation, never fight against it, if the heel is caught
Execution
- 1 The moment the entanglement forms, hand-fight to prevent the palm-to-wrist grip on your heel
- 2 Point the knee and toes away from the attacker's chest to hide the heel
- 3 Backstep or scissor the legs to slide your knee past their knee line
- 4 Once the knee is free, stand or clear the remaining hooks and pass the open legs
Common mistakes
- × Pulling the foot straight out, which serves the heel to the grip
- × Waiting until the grip is locked — heel hook defense is won before the hands connect
