Angelo Claiborne

Angelo Claiborne was born at Prince George's Hospital in Bladensburg, Maryland, and raised in the neighboring community of Temple Hills. From an early age, he displayed a level of hyperactivity that prompted his parents to seek a structured outlet for his energy. That search led them to Team Lloyd Irvin, where, at just five years old, Claiborne enrolled in the academy's kids' martial arts program, known as Thai Jitsu.

The early immersion in Team Lloyd Irvin's training environment proved formative. By seven, Claiborne had narrowed his focus exclusively to jiu-jitsu, coming under the guidance of coach Donnie Achnick — affectionately known as Master Donald. Training under Achnick from such a young age gave Claiborne a deep technical foundation and instilled the competitive mindset that would define his rise through the sport's amateur and professional ranks.

During his junior and senior years of high school, Claiborne stepped onto the wrestling mat and quickly demonstrated that his grappling instincts translated powerfully to the folkstyle format. His performances in the 11th and 12th grades culminated in a Montgomery County Wrestling title, affirming his standing as one of the region's elite young grapplers.

Despite the accolades wrestling brought, Claiborne recognized where his true competitive ambitions lay. At 17, he made the deliberate decision to step away from wrestling and commit fully to jiu-jitsu. The wrestling experience was far from wasted — it reinforced his base game, sharpened his takedown instincts, and deepened the competitive resilience he had been building at Team Lloyd Irvin since childhood. That pivotal choice set him on a direct course toward the IBJJF competitive circuit, where he would go on to distinguish himself across multiple belt levels.

Angelo Claiborne's progression through the IBJJF colored belt divisions stands as one of the more consistent competitive records produced by Team Lloyd Irvin. Guided throughout by Lloyd Irvin and coach Donnie Achnick, Claiborne built a résumé defined by sustained excellence rather than isolated peaks.

Blue and Purple Belt Highlights

At blue belt, Claiborne announced himself on the regional circuit by claiming gold at the 2015 IBJJF New York Spring Open. He closed out that belt level with a bronze medal at the 2015 IBJJF World Championship — a result that signaled his readiness to compete at the sport's highest levels. He also captured the 2015 IBJJF New York BJJ Pro title at purple belt that same year, bridging the gap between belt promotions with immediate results.

The purple belt years deepened his reputation on the international stage. Claiborne returned to New York to take gold at the 2016 IBJJF New York Spring Open, then elevated his performance globally with a silver medal finish at the 2016 IBJJF World Championship — the sport's most prestigious annual event.

Brown Belt Dominance

Claiborne's brown belt tenure proved to be the most decorated stretch of his colored belt career. He captured gold at both the 2017 IBJJF New York BJJ Pro and the 2018 IBJJF New York BJJ Pro, while also winning the 2017 IBJJF New York Spring Open and the 2019 IBJJF New York Spring Open Absolute. On the Pan Championship stage, he earned silver in both 2017 and 2019, along with a bronze in 2018 — a level of continental championship consistency that few competitors maintain across multiple years.

In June 2019, Lloyd Irvin promoted Claiborne to black belt, a recognition that capped a colored belt career built on years of disciplined training and repeated podium performances at the sport's most competitive events.
