His sporting education began remarkably early — introduced to swimming before the age of one, he competed in the pool from around age six through approximately age twelve. As his swimming years wound down, football (soccer) became his primary passion, and Arges eventually rose to captain his school team — a role that reflected both his skill and his leadership instincts on the pitch.

At age fourteen, Arges had his first encounter with martial arts through Thai-boxing, though that commitment proved short-lived given how seriously he was pursuing football at the time. The door to jiu-jitsu opened through social connections rather than any deliberate search for a new sport. Several of his friends trained and competed in BJJ, frequently inviting Arges to watch tournaments and attend informal open mat sessions. Those repeated exposures gradually broke down any resistance, and at around age sixteen he stepped onto the mats properly for the first time, joining a gym near his house that he was already visiting for general fitness training.

His first instructor was Fernando Fialho of the Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte team — known in some sources by the alternate spelling "Failho." In a 2016 interview with Jiu-Jitsu Style magazine, Arges described 2012 as his first year taking competition truly seriously, but acknowledged that the results did not immediately follow — a difficult stretch that led him to question whether to prioritize jiu-jitsu over his academic future, at one point weighing the possibility of pursuing an engineering degree. Winning the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship at purple belt in 2013 fundamentally changed his mindset and gave him the confidence to commit fully to chasing major titles.
