Born on March 9, 1990, in London, England, and raised in Port Talbot, South Wales, Ross Nicholls developed an early relationship with martial arts discipline that would lay the groundwork for a distinguished BJJ career. From age 6 through 14, he trained aikido — a nearly decade-long commitment that cultivated a deep understanding of body mechanics, movement efficiency, and the principles of force redirection. Those foundational concepts would later translate with remarkable precision onto the grappling mat.

His entry into BJJ came through friends already active in the sport, a social pathway that has launched many notable careers. Following their lead, Nicholls stepped onto the mat under Kevin Kox, who held a purple belt at the time. The shift from aikido's movement-based framework to the ground-oriented demands of jiu-jitsu represented a deliberate evolution — one Nicholls embraced without hesitation and pursued with the same rigor that defined his earlier training.

Nicholls built the technical core of his game under Kevin Kox before relocating to London for university — a move that proved pivotal to his development. In the capital, he trained across two distinct but complementary environments: the Kox Academy and the Roger Gracie Academy. Exposure to multiple high-level coaches during this formative stretch sharpened both his technical range and competitive instincts.

The influence of César Lima and Roger Gracie ultimately defined his lineage. Gi and No-Gi Credentials

Ross Nicholls established himself as a prominent force on the European BJJ circuit through technically sophisticated performances and a willingness to test himself against elite opposition. His appearances at the Polaris Jiu-Jitsu Invitational — a prestigious submission-only platform that draws top-tier grapplers worldwide — delivered some of his most compelling performances, showcasing a technically refined style that resonated with audiences and analysts alike.

In no-gi competition, Nicholls demonstrated consistent excellence. Back-to-back podium finishes at the IBJJF British NoGi Nationals — a runner-up placement in 2016 followed by a gold medal in 2017 — reflect the kind of sustained output that defines elite competitors.
