Born on September 6, 1994, in Brazil, Jhenifer Aquino grew up in a household where sport was a way of life. Physical activity was woven into her daily routine from childhood, cultivating the competitive instincts that would later define her on the mat. Her first serious discipline was capoeira, which she began at age 11, building the coordination, body awareness, and competitive edge that translate naturally to grappling. Handball, volleyball, and football (soccer) rounded out her early athletic life, reflecting a broad passion for sport rather than a narrow fixation on any single pursuit.

It was her twin sister, Thamires Aquino, who opened the door to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Thamires had been training under Coach André Ricardo for a year and was so enthusiastic about the experience that she convinced a 15-year-old Jhenifer to step onto the mats for the first time. Coach Ricardo recognized both sisters' natural aptitude immediately, nurturing their technical development alongside a genuine appetite for competition — laying the foundation for two distinguished BJJ careers.

Unlike Thamires Aquino, who committed to a professional BJJ career early, Jhenifer chose a deliberate detour. Prioritizing her university education, she stepped away from competitive jiu-jitsu as a blue belt, practicing only sporadically and recreationally over several years. This pause set her apart from many elite grapplers who dedicate themselves to the sport full-time from a young age — and made her eventual ascent all the more remarkable.

The turning point came through her relationship with Matheus Gonzaga, a prolific jiu-jitsu black belt whom she would later marry. Gonzaga's influence reignited her passion for the sport, and she returned to training with renewed intensity at Bernardo Faria's Academy in Massachusetts, where Bernardo Faria awarded her the purple belt. That Massachusetts chapter proved essential — providing both the technical foundation and the competitive mentality she needed to take the next step.

Seeking elite-level competition, Aquino and Gonzaga relocated to San Diego, California, where she joined Atos Jiu-Jitsu headquarters and committed fully to life as a professional athlete. The transformation was immediate. Under the leadership of André Galvão, Aquino dominated the brown belt ranks before Galvão promoted her to black belt on December 28, 2021 — completing a journey that was anything but linear, yet no less impressive for it.

Once Jhenifer Aquino committed fully to the Atos Jiu-Jitsu competitive program, her ascent through the IBJJF's colored belt divisions was rapid and decisive. Competing in the Peso Galo division (48.5 kg / 107.0 lbs) and representing the United States, she established herself as one of the most formidable grapplers at her weight class across multiple belt levels.

At purple belt, Aquino signaled her arrival as a serious contender by claiming gold at the 2020 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship. Her brown belt campaign made the statement undeniable. In 2021, she swept the IBJJF's most prestigious events — winning the 2021 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, the 2021 IBJJF World Championship in the gi, and the IBJJF American Nationals — demonstrating a consistency across formats and competitive stages that few athletes at any belt level achieve.

The move to black belt brought no slowdown. Aquino made an immediate impact at the elite level, capturing gold at both the 2022 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship and the 2022 IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship, proving her effectiveness across gi and no-gi formats alike. She sustained that level in subsequent seasons, reaching the final of the IBJJF World Championship in the gi in both 2023 and 2024 — earning silver medals on each occasion — before adding a second no-gi world title at the 2024 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship. Across multiple seasons and formats, these results confirm her standing as one of the elite black belt competitors in the Peso Galo division.

Jhenifer Aquino's story cannot be told apart from the relationships that shaped her development. Bernardo Faria provided the mentorship and training environment at his Massachusetts academy that proved critical to her re-entry into competitive jiu-jitsu.
