The event that redirected his life came during a middle school street fight. He joined a local MMA gym at around 15 to 16 years old, training almost exclusively with adult men in sessions that were physically punishing — he left in tears on many occasions, and kept returning. He began training BJJ under Jaime Cruz in New Jersey while wrestling at Parsippany Hills High School, carrying a folder of printed techniques around school in place of his actual coursework. Commitment and Brown Belt Dominance

At brown belt, Danis assembled one of the more impressive competitive résumés of his generation: IBJJF World Championship titles in both gi and no-gi in 2014, the Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2014, and multiple IBJJF Pan Championship titles. He received his black belt from Marcelo Garcia on April 13, 2015 — a promotion that confirmed a professional path he had been building since early adolescence.

Black Belt Competition and Suspension from the Academy

As a black belt, Danis reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 IBJJF World Championship. That confidence took a public hit in April 2017, when Danis was suspended from Marcelo Garcia Academy (also operating under the name Alliance Jiu-Jitsu NYC) alongside training partner Mansher "Munch" Khera. Marcelo Garcia announced the decision in a 16-minute video, citing internal tensions that had been building within the gym — tensions he acknowledged were compounded by his own extended absence while caring for his father's health in Brazil. After consulting with coaches Paul Schreiner and Bernardo Faria, Marcelo made the decision public, emphasizing the importance of positive energy in the training environment while leaving the door open for future dialogue. The BJJ Heroes profile on Danis connected the fallout, at least in part, to the very public persona he had developed during his deep immersion in Conor McGregor's training camp.

Dillon Danis's approach to grappling competition is direct and unambiguous. In the 2016 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, he described his style as high pace, relentless forward pressure, and aggressive submission hunting — a philosophy shaped almost entirely by his years under Marcelo Garcia. His stated goal was to make opponents "never want to fight him again" after experiencing his pace, and he openly downplayed the role of formal strength and conditioning, pointing to Marcelo's own example as justification.

Metamoris, Polaris, and the Knee Injury

The grappling career Danis built on the competitive circuit validated that philosophy. At Metamoris 6 on May 9, 2015, he submitted UFC veteran Joe Lauzon via D'arce Choke in one of the most prominent grappling appearances of his early black belt career. In the 2016 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, Danis noted he was among the first athletes to sign an exclusive Metamoris contract, and while he described the promotion's internal situation as a "mess," he acknowledged that Ralek Gracie was personally professional and honored his fight purse when others reportedly went unpaid.

On October 29, 2016, at Polaris Pro 4 in the United Kingdom, Danis submitted Jackson Sousa via Heel Hook, adding a leg lock finish to his upper-body submission portfolio. His match against Garry Tonon at Polaris 5 told a far more consequential story. Danis sustained catastrophic knee damage during the bout after refusing to tap to leg locks — a defining expression of his resistance to conceding positional submissions. Garry Tonon won via unanimous decision; the knee injury occurred during the bout rather than as the finishing mechanism. In 2016, he was hired by Conor McGregor as a grappling coach for UFC 202, and what began as a professional arrangement evolved into a close personal friendship. The two trained together extensively and lived together in the lead-up to McGregor's first fight with Nate Diaz. Bellator Signing and Professional Debut

In the week of March 14, 2017, Yahoo! Sports broke the story that Danis had signed with Bellator MMA. His debut was expected before the end of 2017. Bellator President Scott Coker framed the signing as part of a deliberate organizational strategy — the same approach he had applied at Strikeforce — pointing to the development arcs of Daniel Cormier, Tyron Woodley, Ronda Rousey, and Luke Rockhold as examples of elite single-discipline athletes who became MMA stars. In a quote published in Gracie Magazine that same week, Danis stated: "I want to fight the best, just like Conor does. We set high goals and are not afraid to try to reach them. I feel he is the best, in my opinion, and so if people want to compare us, well, how could it be bad if you were a basketball player to be compared to Michael Jordan? He is a champion for a reason. But I want to follow my own path and do it my way."

The debut did not arrive until more than a year after the signing. On April 28, 2018, at Bellator 198, Danis made his professional MMA debut and defeated Kyle Walker via Toe Hold submission in Round 1 at 1:38. A planned boxing excursion ended before it began. Danis was booked to face KSI at Misfits Boxing 21, scheduled for March 29, 2025. In an October 10, 2025 interview, he described ongoing negotiations for potential bouts against Eddie Hall, expressing a preference for straight MMA rules, and a separate opponent he identified as a "three-time UFC world champion." On November 15, 2025, UFC 322 took place at Madison Square Garden, and Danis became involved in a brawl at the event. In the aftermath, UFC President Dana White announced that Danis was banned from attending future UFC events — a public and definitive exclusion from the organization he had claimed was reluctant to sign him.

The consequences extended beyond the ban. Danis sustained a severe concussion during the incident, and as of December 2025, both a scheduled MMA title fight and a deposition in the ongoing Nina Agdal lawsuit had been delayed as a result.
