Dillon Danis was born on August 22, 1993, and by his own account grew up as a weak, frail kid with no background in combat sports. His introduction to grappling came not in a gym but in a middle school hallway, when a street fight forced him to act on instinct. In a 2016 interview with Jiu-Jitsu Style (Issue 35), Danis recalled that a wrestler friend had offered simple pre-fight advice — "take him down and choke him" — and that he found himself sinking a rear naked choke in the heat of the moment. The threats and harassment that followed were not a deterrent but a catalyst. Determined to learn to fight properly, he became consumed by MMA and BJJ as a teenager after watching Georges St-Pierre dismantle Matt Serra in their rematch — a performance he credited with igniting his obsession.

At roughly fifteen or sixteen years old, Danis joined a local MMA gym in New Jersey, training under Jaime Cruz while also wrestling at Parsippany Hills High School. The environment was demanding: he trained primarily alongside adult men, often left sessions in tears, and started unable to complete a single push-up. Rather than discouraging him, the difficulty deepened his commitment. He carried a folder of printed BJJ techniques around school, studying the art wherever he could find a spare moment. After graduating high school, Danis made the decision that defined the next chapter of his career. With strong support from his mother, he began commuting by train from New Jersey to the Marcelo Garcia Academy in New York City, attending double sessions whenever possible. In the 2016 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, he was candid about his priorities: he had never intended to attend college, and he would have accepted poverty or sleeping on the mats rather than abandon the pursuit of BJJ.

The visit that sealed his commitment came when he first stopped by the academy and found Marcelo Garcia training alongside Ryan Hall. He decided on the spot that New York City was where he needed to be, and eventually relocated full-time at age 19. Danis described Garcia as a demanding mentor who holds athletes he believes in to exceptionally high standards — training every class and pushing those around him to match his own relentless work ethic.

Danis's brown belt years were, by his own account, a period of near-total dominance. He described winning every tournament he entered and submitting top-level competitors, including one who later became an IBJJF black belt world champion. That run culminated in his promotion to black belt on April 13, 2015 — a milestone that arrived alongside his entry into some of the sport's most prestigious submission grappling events.

The academy chapter closed on a complicated note. In April 2017, Marcelo Garcia announced in a 16-minute video that Danis and training partner Mansher "Munch" Khera had been suspended from the Marcelo Garcia Academy (operating as Alliance Jiu-Jitsu NYC). Garcia cited internal quarrels that had built up during a period when he had been absent, caring for his father's health in Brazil. He emphasized the importance of positive energy and meaningful priorities over social media, and consulted with coaches Paul Schreiner and Bernardo Faria before making the decision. Garcia left open the possibility of a future discussion, stopping short of permanent expulsion. The fallout was widely attributed in part to the very public persona Danis had cultivated during his time embedded in Conor McGregor's camp.

As a competitor, Dillon Danis built his reputation on pace and aggression. In the 2016 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, he described his style as high-tempo, forward-pressing, and built around relentless submission hunting — an approach he traced directly to the influence of Marcelo Garcia. He stated he wanted every opponent to "never want to fight him again" after experiencing his pace, and he joked about his deliberate avoidance of strength and conditioning work, a philosophy he aligned with Garcia's own example.

His most high-profile submission grappling appearance came at Metamoris 6 on May 9, 2015, where he submitted Joe Lauzon via D'arce Choke. In the Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, Danis described the broader situation around Metamoris as a "mess" but noted that Ralek Gracie had been personally fair to him, paying him for his bout even as other fighters reportedly went unpaid. At Polaris Pro 4 in 2016, he added another notable result, submitting Jackson Sousa via heel hook in the United Kingdom.

At the IBJJF World Championship in 2016, Danis reached the quarterfinals at black belt — a result he viewed as narrowly short of a potential title run. He stated that had he beaten Otávio Sousa, he believed he would have defeated the next two opponents as well. That same year, he claimed gold at the IBJJF No-Gi Pan American Championship in his weight division and reached the absolute final alongside teammate Jon Satava, with the two closing out the division between them. A photograph of Danis competing against Leandro Lo at Copa Podio further underscored the level of opposition he sought out during his competitive peak.

Coach Brian McLaughlin of AMA Fight Club, who worked closely with Danis, offered perhaps the most detailed external assessment of his grappling ability. The most consequential match of Dillon Danis's grappling career was not one he won. At Polaris 5, facing Garry Tonon, Danis refused to tap to leg lock attacks and sustained catastrophic damage to his knee during the bout. Tonon took the unanimous decision victory — the injury was not the finishing mechanism but occurred in the course of the contest, a distinction Brian McLaughlin was careful to draw in his account of events.

What followed was a protracted medical ordeal. Danis delayed surgery after the match, and when he eventually underwent knee reconstruction, the procedure used cadaver tissue that his body rejected. The two became close friends and training partners, living together in the lead-up to McGregor's first fight with Nate Diaz, with their conversations about training and mindset running deep. In the 2016 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, Danis defended McGregor's ground skills and contextualized the first Diaz loss by noting that McGregor had been bulking up to 170 pounds while Diaz was cutting down from a substantially higher natural weight. In 2016, McGregor formally hired him as a grappling coach for UFC 202.

The relationship also accelerated Danis's own MMA ambitions. He noted that training alongside McGregor had influenced the timing of his transition, and that fighters from both MMA and BJJ were calling him out before he had thrown a single professional punch. He expressed openness to a UFC contract if one were offered immediately, and stated with characteristic directness: "winners focus on winning and losers focus on winners."

On March 14, 2017, Yahoo! Sports reported that Danis had signed with Bellator MMA, with his debut originally expected before the end of that year at welterweight. Bellator President Scott Coker framed the signing around a developmental model he had previously employed at Strikeforce, pointing to elite single-discipline athletes — Daniel Cormier, Tyron Woodley, Ronda Rousey, and Luke Rockhold — as crossover success stories. In a quote cited by Gracie Magazine at the time of signing, Danis said: "I want to fight the best, just like Conor does. We set high goals and are not afraid to try to reach them. I feel he is the best, in my opinion, and so if people want to compare us, well, how could it be bad if you were a basketball player to be compared to Michael Jordan? He is a champion for a reason. But I want to follow my own path and do it my way."

The debut did not materialize in 2017. Danis finally stepped into the Bellator cage on April 28, 2018 at Bellator 198, submitting Kyle Walker via Toe Hold in the first round at 1:38. He earned one additional first-round submission victory under the Bellator banner before stepping away from MMA — a two-fight stint that left his professional record unblemished but his potential largely untested against elite opposition.

A boxing crossover with KSI at Misfits Boxing 21, scheduled for March 29, 2025, generated significant attention before it ever took place. A March 4, 2025 press conference promoting the bout ended in a brawl when KSI slapped Danis with a pancake. The fight was ultimately cancelled on March 21, 2025 after KSI fell ill. Ahead of a planned MMA return, Danis visited Mike Perry to sharpen his striking.

The comeback arrived on August 30, 2025 at Misfits Boxing 22. Facing Warren Spencer, Danis finished the fight via Guillotine Choke from mount in just 15 seconds — the quickest win of his career — to claim the inaugural Misfits MMA Light Heavyweight Championship, contested at a 175-pound limit.

The autumn of 2025 brought further turbulence. On November 16, 2025, UFC President Dana White announced that Danis was banned from attending future UFC events following a brawl at UFC 322. The incident left Danis with a severe concussion, which caused him to delay both a deposition in the Nina Agdal lawsuit and a subsequent MMA title defense.

Holding the inaugural Misfits MMA Light Heavyweight Championship following his August 30, 2025 victory, Danis entered the final months of 2025 with an undefeated MMA record and an expanding profile within the Misfits promotional ecosystem. In an October 10, 2025 interview, he claimed a 3–0 professional MMA record and stated his belief that the UFC is "scared" to sign him. He described ongoing negotiations for potential matchups against Eddie Hall — expressing a preference for straight MMA rules — and against an opponent he characterized as a "three-time UFC world champion."

On the grappling front, Danis confirmed in the same October 2025 interview that he had been invited to compete at the Craig Jones Invitational and the most recent ADCC, declining both to remain focused on MMA. He left the door open for a return to high-level no-gi competition — including a potential rematch with Gordon Ryan — on the condition of proper preparation and significant financial incentive, stating on March 12, 2025 that he would consider a Ryan rematch only for "big money."

The most substantial test of his MMA career looms on August 29, 2026, when Danis is scheduled to face Mike Perry in the main event of Duel: Arena. Perry departed the UFC in 2021 carrying a 14–8 professional record and has since compiled an undefeated run in bare-knuckle boxing, holding the "King of Violence" title.
