Polaris Pro 3 and the Agazarm Match

His appearance at Polaris Pro 3 on April 2, 2016, against AJ Agazarm drew considerable attention, though not entirely for the grappling. Shields described the match as extremely entertaining while also characterizing Agazarm's conduct throughout—trash talk before, during, and after the bout, along with chin rubs, fish-hooking, and eye rakes—as deliberately disrespectful. An outside party had contacted Cesar Gracie and attempted to pressure him into revoking Shields' BJJ black belt as retaliation for Shields' public positions on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Shields disclosed the situation through a YouTube video, quoting directly from the email Gracie had forwarded to him.

In his own words: "Cesar Gracie, my jiu-jitsu coach, sent me this funny email earlier of this guy trying to get him to kick me, to strip away my black belt. Obviously, he's not going to do it."
