Otavio Sousa began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey at age 13 at Gracie Barra Recife in Brazil. Under the expert mentorship of renowned instructor José Olímpio, widely known as "Zé Radiola," Sousa rapidly developed a robust competitive foundation. Zé Radiola, celebrated for cultivating elite-level talent, guided Sousa meticulously through the ranks, shaping him into one of the sport's most promising competitors.

After claiming victory at the prestigious Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, Otavio Sousa received his black belt from Carlos Gracie Junior. Recognizing his potential as both competitor and instructor, Gracie Barra invited Sousa to lead their academy in Irvine, California, owned by Chris Pizzo. However, Sousa's tenure at the Irvine academy ended abruptly and controversially when he was dismissed via email during a vacation. The dismissal arose from disagreements over Sousa's extensive competition schedule and seminar commitments, which the academy owner believed detracted from his responsibilities at the gym. This decision sparked significant protest among Sousa's students, many of whom left the academy in solidarity with their instructor.

Following his departure from Irvine, Otavio Sousa assumed the head instructor position at Gracie Barra Huntington Beach. In this role, he has solidified his reputation as a respected mentor, actively guiding and developing emerging athletes within the Gracie Barra community. Sousa regularly conducts international seminars and training camps, promoting Gracie Barra philosophies and sharing technical insights drawn from his extensive championship experience.

Pressure-Based Dominance: "The Steamroller"

Otavio Sousa is widely recognized for his relentless, pressure-based competition style, earning him the nickname "The Steamroller." Primarily competing in the middleweight division, Sousa consistently achieves success at major IBJJF tournaments, securing multiple World and Pan American Championship titles. His tactical approach emphasizes positional dominance, heavy top pressure, and methodical guard passing, systematically breaking down opponents' defenses.
