Brabo Choke D’arce

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The opponent's own arm is wedged against their neck to create the choking pressure, so keeping that arm pinned tight to their carotid is essential.
  • · Your choking arm threads shallow-to-deep from the far side, traveling under the neck and over the trapped arm to connect with your bicep.
  • · Chest-to-shoulder pressure and hip sprawl eliminate space, preventing the opponent from pulling their arm free or turning into you.
  • · The finish relies on squeezing your elbows together and walking your hips toward the trapped-arm side, not just arm strength.
  • · Anticipate the opponent trying to pummel out the trapped arm by immediately clamping your elbow tight and dropping your weight.

Execution

  1. 1 From a controlling position, identify the opponent's exposed arm (underhook or posting arm) and feed your choking-side arm under their neck, past the chin, aiming your hand toward their far armpit.
  2. 2 Connect a figure-four (RNC-style) grip by clasping your feeding hand onto your opposite bicep, ensuring the opponent's arm is trapped between your forearm and their own neck.
  3. 3 Sprawl your hips back and drive chest pressure onto their shoulder to tighten the configuration and prevent escape.
  4. 4 Walk your hips toward the trapped-arm side, squeeze your elbows together, and angle slightly to apply maximum carotid compression for the finish.

Common mistakes

  • × Threading the choking arm too deep past the opponent's neck, which shifts pressure off the carotid and turns it into a crank rather than a clean strangle.
  • × Failing to sprawl and staying too upright, giving the opponent space to swim their trapped arm free or re-pummel an underhook.
  • × Squeezing only with the arms without walking the hips laterally, resulting in insufficient pressure and a stalling choke that fatigues your grip.
