Fábio Gurgel was born on January 18, 1970, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 1983 at the age of 13 under Romero 'Jacaré' Cavalcanti. His ascent through the belt ranks was swift and driven by consistent competitive results. He earned his yellow belt at 14 and his blue belt at 15 — the latter already marking him as a standout talent, as he claimed his first major title, the "Campeão Carioca" (Rio de Janeiro State Champion), while still competing at that level. In 1994, he relocated to São Paulo and established an Alliance branch in the city — a strategic expansion that proved foundational to the team's national and eventually international reach. That same year, he won the first-ever Brazilian National Championship held under the newly formed CBJJ, a title he successfully defended in 1995 and again in 1996. This structure is particularly important at the scale Alliance operates: year-end promotion ceremonies can see approximately 80 students promoted, meaning instructors may not have personal familiarity with every candidate. This philosophy was illustrated publicly in early 2026, when Gurgel addressed scrutiny surrounding the blue belt promotion of Brazilian model and former MTV Brasil host Daniella Cicarelli, who had trained for approximately six months as of January 7, 2026. Gurgel explained that Cicarelli had trained up to four times per day — a combination of private and group classes — reached the 150-class threshold, sat the Alliance belt examination, and passed it. He argued that jiu-jitsu is not a professional sport and may never become one, pointing to the art's limited mainstream appeal, the absence of consistent television presence, and the financial instability that has historically plagued its major promotions.

While acknowledging that a small tier of elite athletes can sustain themselves through sponsorships, Gurgel cautioned that the majority of competitors will need to transition to other income sources — most commonly coaching — after roughly five to six years of active competition. His view was not dismissive of the sport's value, but rather a realistic appraisal of its economic structure and cultural footprint.

On the question of jiu-jitsu in public education, Gurgel expressed opposition to universal, state-run programs that would introduce the art into public schools across the board, citing limited measurable impact, quality-control challenges, and competing budget priorities within public institutions.
