Born on July 26, 1989, AJ Agazarm grew up in Florida as a multi-sport athlete whose competitive instincts surfaced early. A football teammate recognized his potential and steered him toward wrestling — a decision that paid immediate dividends. Agazarm won significant championships throughout his high school career and earned a scholarship to a NAIA school in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

His entry into combat sports arrived by accident. When a friend competing at an amateur MMA event lost his opponent to a no-show, Agazarm stepped in on short notice and won by submission inside the first minute. As he recounted in a 2014 interview with Jiu-Jitsu Style, the finish resembled a rear naked choke on video, but Agazarm maintained it was not a true RNC — his opponent tapped, he believed, simply from having his back taken. He told his father about the experience, and the direction was immediate: find a jiu-jitsu school. His father contacted Eduardo de Lima — then a 4th-degree black belt working toward his 5th, under Master Carlos — to announce that a wrestler was coming to train, and to ask Eduardo to make AJ a world champion.

Agazarm began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2006 at a Gracie Barra school under Eduardo de Lima, and from his first sessions he made his intentions clear. Training twice a day, six days a week, he attended every one of Eduardo's classes without exception. That relentless pace earned him his blue belt in just three months and a gold medal in his first year of competition.

Eduardo de Lima stands as the figure Agazarm credits most with bridging the gap between his wrestling background and the nuances of jiu-jitsu — channeling his intensity, stamina, and competitive drive into a smoother transition than most wrestlers experience. A particularly formative moment came when Eduardo's first black belt, Rich Travis — competing as a brown belt at the time — repeatedly triangled Agazarm, forcing him to genuinely reckon with the art and develop a deeper understanding of it.

Even as a white belt, Agazarm's trajectory attracted attention at the highest levels of the Gracie family. He attended a seminar by Master Carlos Gracie, who spoke with Eduardo about AJ and expressed interest in having him move to Brazil, live with the Gracie family, and train toward his black belt. In the 2014 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, Agazarm explained that he chose a different path — completing his college education, transferring to The Ohio State University, walking on to the wrestling team, and earning a degree in finance.

Before departing for Ohio, Agazarm had already established himself on the international stage, winning the IBJJF Pan American Championships as a blue belt. In Columbus, he trained at a Relson Gracie Academy under head professor Robin Geisler while maintaining his Gracie Barra affiliation for competition — a pragmatic, results-driven arrangement that would define his approach throughout his career.

In 2007, he won the IBJJF Blue Belt World Championships. His promotion to purple belt arrived under unusual circumstances: letters from within the community argued he should no longer be competing at blue belt, and the promotion was made mid-tournament at the IBJJF World Championships. He finished that event in 3rd place after receiving the belt — a fitting symbol of the competitive pressure that followed him through every rank.

After graduating from Ohio State, Agazarm returned to Florida and resumed full-time training with Eduardo de Lima. His brown belt years produced some of his most emotionally resonant competitive memories. In the 2014 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, he singled out the 2012 IBJJF Pan American Championship as a proud milestone — specifically defeating "Sinistro" in the quarterfinals, avenging two losses suffered at purple belt, before facing Steve Martin in the final. He described beating Sinistro as the sweetest moment of that entire run. The semi-final of the 2013 IBJJF Pan American Championship against Victor Silverio was another match he cited as one where he felt the purest joy of jiu-jitsu.

In 2013, Eduardo de Lima and Carlos Gracie Junior awarded Agazarm his black belt — a promotion that coincided with a historic milestone. He became the first foreigner to win the Brazilian National No-Gi Championship at black belt, announcing his arrival at the sport's highest level on emphatic terms.

Agazarm's black belt career unfolded as a sustained campaign across the world's most competitive grappling circuits. His flagship achievement came in 2014, when he claimed the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in the Adult Men's Black Belt Light Division — the title that anchors his competitive legacy and the result he returns to whenever critics question his credentials.

The surrounding years proved equally productive. He won the IBJJF Pan American No-Gi Championship in 2013 and reached finals at Pan Ams and Worlds on multiple additional occasions from 2013 through 2018. He captured the IBJJF European No-Gi Open three times — in 2013, 2014, and 2017 — establishing himself as a consistent force across both gi and no-gi formats.

The peak of his grappling career arrived at the 2017 ADCC World Championship, where he earned a silver medal in the Men's Under 145 lbs / 66 kg division. ADCC silver represents one of the most difficult results to achieve in submission grappling, and it confirmed his standing among the world's elite at his weight class. His competition résumé across this period spans IBJJF, ADCC, Sub Only, Polaris, Berkut, and UFC Fight Pass Invitational rulesets — reflecting a willingness to compete anywhere, under any set of rules.

His path through this era was not without interruption. He emerged from a 12-month IBJJF suspension in March 2016, and during that period competed in a notable match against Jake Shields at Polaris 3 in Poole, England. The suspension did little to slow his output once it lifted. His career grappling record stands at 114-69-4.

Agazarm approached the early phases of his jiu-jitsu career with the methodical discipline of a student as much as a competitor. Throughout his white, blue, purple, and early brown belt years, he kept detailed training journals — recording what he learned, what he carried over from wrestling, and what required adaptation — as a tool for setting goals and sustaining his passion for the sport. In the 2014 Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, he described everything before black belt as a stepping stone to the real beginning of his jiu-jitsu journey.

After receiving his black belt, his philosophy shifted toward total immersion. He committed to competing as often as possible, traveling internationally, and learning Portuguese — which he encouraged American practitioners to study, viewing it as both a cultural and competitive advantage. He embraced the sport's lifestyle fully, down to the daily açaí ritual that later became part of his public persona.

Agazarm credits years of consistent competition with eliminating pre-fight nerves entirely. He has spoken openly about wanting to serve as a role model — for his younger brother and for non-Brazilian practitioners broadly — in the same way older training partners encouraged him as a teenager first finding his footing in the sport. His original goal when entering BJJ was always MMA, and after earning his black belt he chose to first explore competitive grappling deeply before pursuing that path, aiming to understand the sport's culture from the inside out.

Agazarm signed with Bellator MMA in November 2018, with his fight camps led by Nick Diaz and featuring training partners including Kron Gracie and Nate Diaz — a crew whose grappling pedigree complemented his own. He made his professional debut on January 26, 2019, at Bellator 214 in Inglewood, California, called on short notice to face Jesse Roberts at a 160 lbs catchweight. Despite the late call-up, he had been training for a potential bout for months at Nick Diaz's MMA academy in California.

Between 2019 and 2020, Agazarm fought five times under the Bellator banner and went 3-2, showcasing the elite grappling that had defined his career while absorbing the broader lessons of a full MMA environment. His Bellator run ended at Bellator 243, where he tore his knee and lost a decision; Bellator released him from his contract shortly afterward. Agazarm has stated that the injury was the primary factor in his departure and that he retains the desire to return to MMA, leaving the door open for another run in a different promotion.

Following his release from Bellator, Agazarm returned to the grappling scene with the same combination of sharp performances and sharp words that had characterized his pre-MMA career, competing in Polaris and UFC Fight Pass Invitational events to re-establish himself in submission grappling.

At UFC Fight Pass Invitational 5 in December 2023, his presence generated heat before any match took place. A backstage altercation with ADCC champion Yuri Simões was captured on video, showing the two exchanging words and nearly coming to blows before coaches — including Caio Terra — intervened to separate them. The cause of the confrontation was not clearly established, but the footage reinforced Agazarm's reputation as one of the sport's most combustible personalities.

In late 2023, he made broader headlines by publicly accusing FloGrappling's Who's Number One event of match-fixing — specifically alleging that a high-profile match between Gordon Ryan and Patrick Gaudio had a prearranged outcome, with Gaudio allegedly contracted to lose by a specific submission. Both Ryan and Gaudio denied the allegations, and the broader grappling community — including FloGrappling staff and numerous competitors — criticized Agazarm for the claim, characterizing it as unsubstantiated. Interest in the accusations faded in the absence of corroborating evidence.

In June 2025, Agazarm revealed a separate behind-the-scenes development: he had originally been selected to coach opposite Mikey Musumeci at UFC BJJ 1 before the promotion chose Rerisson Gabriel for the role instead.

Agazarm occupies a specific and carefully cultivated niche in the BJJ world — the legitimately credentialed competitor who never lets anyone forget it, and who generates as much attention through his words as through his performances. His promotional style draws frequent comparisons to Chael Sonnen, blending genuine trash talk with a self-awareness that occasionally tips into self-parody.

His social media presence under the handle @thefloridaboy on Instagram and Twitter has been a consistent source of controversy. He has engaged in public disputes with Nate Diaz and Nick Diaz — former training partners — mocked opponents following victories, and posted self-deprecating content when results went the other way. When Gordon Ryan publicly shared serious health issues in 2023, Agazarm tweeted that the situation was "what happens when you pump your body full of steroids," implying the troubles were self-inflicted. The comment drew significant backlash; Agazarm maintained he was simply being honest.

His persona has extended well beyond competition. In 2017, he appeared on the MTV reality show The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros, where his athleticism and confrontational personality reached a mainstream audience. He also attended a WWE tryout, signaling interest in professional wrestling as another platform for his brand. Earlier in his career, he produced an açaí bowl video with BudoVideos and quipped that "Açaí gives you wings" — a small but telling example of the playful self-promotion woven throughout his public image.

On the question of team allegiance, Agazarm often quips that "Team Agazarm" is the only team he has ever truly been on — a line that reflects both his nomadic affiliation history and his determination to remain his own most important advocate. His standard rebuttal to skeptics remains consistent: "I talk, but I back it up."

Agazarm serves as the lead instructor at his martial arts academy located at 2160 El Camino Real in San Luis Obispo County, California. The academy operated under the Gracie Barra banner for years, tracing a continuous thread back to his first training sessions under Eduardo de Lima in 2006. That affiliation ended in July 2026, when Gracie Barra terminated its relationship with Agazarm approximately two months before his arrest later that year.

Following the split, the academy was rebranded to Agazarmy Atascadero — also referred to as Agazarm Atascadero in some reporting. Despite the affiliation ending in July 2026, the Gracie Barra name remained visible on the academy building as of October 27, 2026. Gracie Barra issued a formal clarification by email: "AJ Agazarm is not affiliated with Gracie Barra and does not represent our organization. His affiliation with Gracie Barra was terminated before the events currently being reported."

The academy represents the operational home of a career that began on those same Gracie Barra mats nearly two decades earlier — a lineage from student to instructor spanning multiple continents of competition and one of the more turbulent public profiles in the sport's recent history.

In September 2026, Agazarm became the subject of legal proceedings following allegations made by his 24-year-old ex-girlfriend, a former jiu-jitsu student who stated the property in question was her family home. On September 22, 2026, at 5:45 p.m., he was taken into custody by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of residential burglary, booked into the main jail that evening, posted $50,000 bail, and was released on September 23, 2026.

The accuser provided security footage from a hidden indoor Ring camera allegedly showing a masked figure in a black hoodie and gloves entering a room in her residence on September 22, 2026, at approximately 3:41 p.m. — roughly two hours before the arrest. According to the accuser, the figure examined objects before discovering and picking up the camera, and allegedly took the camera, legal documents, and the opener for her home's garage and gate.

The accuser described her relationship with Agazarm as beginning around May 2023 and ending in December 2025, characterizing it as "textbook grooming" and alleging both physical and emotional abuse. The protective order history connected to the case spans several months: an emergency protective order was granted on January 8, 2026, by the Atascadero Police Department and remained in effect until January 16, 2026; text and Snapchat records allegedly show Agazarm attempting to contact both his ex-girlfriend and her father after that first order expired; her attorney sent a cease-and-desist letter on September 9, 2026, requesting he stop contacting her and her family.

Approximately one week before his arrest, Agazarm filed his own restraining order against his ex-girlfriend in a domestic violence case in San Luis Obispo County; that filing was temporarily granted but dismissed within a month. A second emergency protective order was issued on the day of the arrest, September 22, 2026, and a temporary restraining order against Agazarm was granted on September 28, 2026, in an ongoing domestic violence case in Ventura County.

As of October 31, 2026, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office had not filed charges in the matter. All legal matters described are allegations; no findings of guilt have been established.
