Key principles
- · Hips must be placed tightly against the back of the opponent's knee to serve as the fulcrum for hyperextension.
- · The opponent's foot and lower leg must be controlled close to your chest, with the pinky-toe side of the foot aligned against your sternum to prevent rotation and escape.
- · Squeezing your knees together traps the thigh and prevents the opponent from pulling the leg free.
- · Bridge your hips forward into the knee while pulling the ankle toward your chest to create opposing forces that finish the submission.
- · Anticipate the primary defense of the opponent bending their knee by immediately re-triangling your legs or clamping tighter before they can extract the leg.
Execution
- 1 Secure the target leg and swing your body perpendicular to it, placing both legs over the opponent's hip and thigh to control their body.
- 2 Clamp your knees tightly together around the opponent's upper thigh, ensuring your hips are snug against the back of their knee.
- 3 Hug the ankle and lower leg tightly to your chest with both arms, keeping the foot's pinky-toe side against your sternum to prevent them from rotating out.
- 4 Extend your hips forward while simultaneously pulling the ankle toward your chest, hyperextending the knee joint to finish.
Common mistakes
- × Leaving space between your hips and the back of the opponent's knee, which removes the fulcrum and allows them to straighten or retract the leg without pressure.
- × Holding the foot with the toes pointing upward instead of controlling pinky-toe side to sternum, enabling the opponent to spin and rotate their knee out of danger.
- × Failing to squeeze the knees together to trap the thigh, allowing the opponent to simply pull their leg free before the submission is applied.
