Lucas Barbosa was born on February 13, 1992, in Brazil. Encouraged by his parents, he engaged in various sports from a young age, including swimming, basketball, and volleyball. At age 10, Barbosa began his martial arts journey, initially training in taekwondo, judo, and Thai boxing. His first exposure to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came at age 15 during a holiday visit to his godfather, an active practitioner. Barbosa's initial BJJ training took place under the guidance of Diego Lopes.

Barbosa's early progression in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu involved training under several influential coaches. He received his blue belt from Cristiano Carioca. As a purple belt, Barbosa relocated to Rio de Janeiro to train under Márcio Rodrigues, who significantly shaped his competitive style. His brown belt promotion was a collaborative effort between Rodrigues and André Fabiano. On July 7, 2015, Fabiano awarded Barbosa his black belt, marking his transition into elite-level competition.

Lucas Barbosa's breakthrough came in 2014 through his participation in Copa Pódio's web-based series "THE TEAM." Competing as part of Leandro Lo's squad, Barbosa delivered dominant performances that captured national attention. In 2022, he secured his fourth IBJJF No-Gi World title, adding to his previous victories in 2017, 2018, and 2019. In 2023, Barbosa captured double gold at the Brazilian Nationals and won the Subversiv team event alongside his teammates. He remains a regular competitor in the BJJ Stars grand prix events. As of 2024, Barbosa maintains a top-five global ranking in the medium-heavyweight division, demonstrating that coaching responsibilities have not diminished his competitive drive.

Lucas Barbosa first explored mixed martial arts (MMA) at age 18 in 2010, training for two years before fully dedicating himself to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In early 2023, he returned to MMA competition, participating in the PFL Challenger Series at welterweight. Barbosa fought a challenging bout, ultimately losing a close decision. Following this experience, he paused his MMA career, citing difficulties balancing MMA training with gi and no-gi grappling. Nevertheless, Barbosa remains open to future MMA opportunities, emphasizing his readiness for any competitive scenario.

In November 2024, Barbosa was promoted to third-degree black belt by André Galvão. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he adopted a plant-based diet, noting significant improvements in recovery, conditioning, and overall physique. Barbosa integrates weightlifting and wrestling into his training regimen, regularly training with local collegiate wrestlers in Oregon. He advocates the intelligent use of strength and athleticism, describing it as an "added weapon" in modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
