Triangle Choke

Submission
Also known as:
Sankaku Jime

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The choke works by trapping one arm in and one arm out, using the opponent's own shoulder as the second compression point against your inner thigh.
  • · Cutting a sharp angle by shifting your hips perpendicular to the opponent eliminates space and dramatically increases choking pressure.
  • · Pulling the head down while squeezing your knees together closes the remaining gap and drives the trapped shoulder into the neck.
  • · Controlling the trapped arm across your centerline (wrist to opposite hip) prevents the opponent from posturing or creating a frame to escape.
  • · When the opponent defends by posturing up, overhook the head or underhook the leg to break posture before locking the triangle.

Execution

  1. 1 Control one arm (push it across or isolate it) while using your hips to shoot your legs up, placing one leg across the back of the opponent's neck with the other leg framing on the bicep of the free arm.
  2. 2 Lock the triangle by placing the crook of your top leg's knee over the ankle of the bottom leg, squeezing your knees together to secure the figure-four.
  3. 3 Cut an angle by hip-escaping toward the trapped arm side, bringing your body perpendicular to the opponent.
  4. 4 Pull the opponent's head down with both hands while squeezing your thighs and elevating your hips to finish the choke.
  5. 5 If needed, grab your shin and readjust the lock higher on the neck before applying final pressure.

Common mistakes

  • × Failing to cut an angle and staying square results in a loose triangle that allows the opponent to posture, stack, and eventually escape.
  • × Locking the triangle too low on the opponent's shoulders instead of high on the neck drastically reduces choking pressure and wastes energy.
  • × Not controlling the trapped arm across the body lets the opponent frame, create space, and work hand-fighting escapes.
