Marcelo Garcia was born on January 17, 1983, in Formiga, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Inspired by action movies of the 1980s, he developed an early passion for martial arts. At age 8, Garcia began training Karate, later transitioning to Judo before ultimately discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Garcia began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey under the guidance of Iran Brasileiro. Recognizing his potential, he soon moved to train full-time with Paulo Rezende, significantly elevating his technical abilities. Seeking further advancement, Garcia relocated to São Paulo to join the prestigious Alliance Jiu-Jitsu team. During this period, he refined his distinctive "Garcia Jiu-Jitsu" style, characterized by dynamic butterfly guard play and precise back-taking techniques.

Marcelo Garcia is widely celebrated for his innovative guard game and exceptional submission skills. He popularized the butterfly guard, demonstrating its effectiveness at the highest levels of competition. Garcia's mastery of back control and the North South Choke became hallmarks of his grappling style. His technical proficiency was notably showcased when he submitted Japanese grappling legend Masakazu Imanari at ONE 170 using his signature choke.

In 2009, Garcia established the Marcelo Garcia Academy in New York City, shifting his primary focus toward teaching and mentoring the next generation of grapplers. After stepping away from active competition, he prioritized family life and academy responsibilities. In November 2024, Garcia expanded his teaching presence by opening a new academy in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii, further solidifying his commitment to spreading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In early 2023, Garcia faced a significant personal challenge when diagnosed with stomach cancer, news that deeply resonated within the BJJ community. After undergoing eight chemotherapy sessions, he successfully achieved remission. Expressing immense gratitude for his recovery, Garcia returned to professional grappling after a 14-year hiatus, submitting Masakazu Imanari at ONE 170 with his renowned North South Choke.

Marcelo Garcia remains a vocal advocate for preserving traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu values, emphasizing humility, respect, and integrity within the community. He famously parted ways with students who did not uphold these standards, reinforcing his commitment to character over commercialization. In an interview with Luke Thomas, Garcia emphasized, "Money is great, but as the sport grows… we have to [keep] our characters."

Marcelo Garcia signed an exclusive contract with ONE Championship, marking his return to professional grappling competition. His comeback generated significant excitement among fans and practitioners alike. Garcia's impressive victory over Masakazu Imanari at ONE 170 highlighted his enduring technical skill and competitive spirit, reaffirming his status as one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's most respected figures.
