About this video
Transitioning from spider guard to X-Guard involves getting underneath the opponent more than for a single leg X. Start with both feet on the biceps, then choose a side to extend one leg while posting the other foot on the mat. Kick out to the side to make the opponent step away, creating space to insert the first hook.
- With the foot on the mat, kick out to the side, allowing the first hook to come in.
- Release the bicep with the hand and reach for the back of the opponent's knee, pulling it in.
- Reach underneath and control just above the knee, clamping down on the leg.
- Use your shoulder and head to keep the opponent's leg tight, ensuring your grip is above the knee.
- Maintain flexed feet to prevent the opponent from pushing down or escaping. Keep the hooks tight and high on the leg.
- Follow the opponent's movements with your hooks, keeping the X-Guard position secure.
Ensuring tight control and flexed feet will make it difficult for the opponent to pass, setting up opportunities for sweeps and submissions.
