About this video
Executing an ankle pick sweep from the X-Guard when the opponent resists:
- Maintain control in the X-Guard with feet tight, hand above the opponent's knee, and head and shoulder pinched for solid control.
- Attempt to extend the opponent out to initiate the sweep. Anticipate their reaction to step back to regain balance.
- As the opponent steps back, quickly grab their ankle and push to complete the sweep.
- Understand that opponents will feel uncomfortable with a wide base and will attempt to bring their feet closer together to maintain a strong base.
- When you stretch the opponent out and they step back, grab the ankle before their foot touches the mat.
- Pull the ankle towards you and kick your feet out to bring the opponent's back to the mat.
- Immediately bring your feet underneath you and transition to the top position.
- From the top, you have multiple passing options. You can bring your knee to the mat for a back step pass, execute a leg drag, or transition into double unders.
- It's crucial to keep the momentum going as you come up on top and immediately look to pass the guard without allowing the opponent to settle.
