About this video
Entering the Single Leg X-Guard (SLX) from Spider Guard involves a series of steps to transition smoothly into the position. Begin by controlling both of your opponent's sleeves and placing both feet on their biceps. Choose a side to extend; for instance, if you choose the right side, your left foot will post on the mat.
- Extend your chosen leg (right leg in this example) while posting your opposite foot (left foot) on the mat.
- Depending on your opponent's size, either pull them straight overhead or to the side. For opponents with shorter legs, it's often easier to kick to the side to avoid feeling crowded.
- As you kick out to the side, force your opponent to step out with their opposite leg (their left leg if you kick to your right).
- Shoot your posting foot (left foot) up to their hip and begin turning into their leg.
- If your opponent steps in close, push on their leg to create distance.
- Hook your foot behind their leg and wrap your arm around their leg to secure the SLX position.
- Once in SLX, lift your hips, pinch your knees together, and drop your hips slightly to finalize the position and prepare for sweeps.
Adjust the angle of your kick based on your opponent's reaction to create the necessary space for entering SLX. This transition is adaptable to the opponent's size and your strategic preferences.
