About this video
Executing a back step pass from the Reverse De La Riva involves a unique grip adjustment. Instead of the usual right-hand collar or side grip, switch to a left-hand collar grip and use the right hand to control the opponent's leg at the outside of the knee. Maintain a low posture and drop the elbow to the mat for support.
- Keep the left hand on the collar and the right hand on the outside of the opponent's knee, ensuring the left foot stays off the mat for mobility.
- Drop the elbow to the mat without telegraphing the back step. Avoid sliding the leg in and kicking out, as this can be anticipated by the opponent.
- Execute the back step by pushing the opponent's leg down while simultaneously swinging the leg over. Aim for a middle ground between looping and sliding the leg back.
- Ensure the back step is far enough to prevent the opponent's legs from following, which could lead to getting stuck or allowing them to replace guard.
- After the back step, circle around without dropping the hip to the mat, which would slow down the transition to the pass.
- Lift the opponent's leg to slide the left knee in and transition into the leg drag position, maintaining control of the bicep and collar.
This technique ensures a smooth transition to the leg drag while keeping both hands in contact with the opponent throughout the pass.
