About this video
Addressing the challenge of passing the guard when an opponent has established a knee shield and is under the leg, the technique begins with maintaining grips on the side of the opponent's gi and the outside of their knee. When the opponent's knee is tight to the chest, the goal is to create space by lifting the opposite leg straight up and down to the ground, which slightly alleviates the pressure from the knee shield.
- Lift the opponent's leg up to create space, allowing the knee shield to come off the chest.
- With the space created, circle the elbow around and drop the weight to clear a path for the knee slide.
- Secure an underhook and choose to either post the hand on the mat or grab onto the back. The preference is to post the hand on the mat under the opponent's armpit.
- Control the opponent's tricep with the other hand, pulling it tight to the chest to prevent them from pulling the elbow back to the mat.
- Slide the knee across, but instead of stopping, keep the hip off the mat and scoot back, forcing the opponent to turn to their side.
- Step the left foot forward slightly, secure an underhook on the shoulder, and circle the left hand around before releasing the pressure of the hip on the opponent's hip.
- Release the hip pressure, come up to the knees, and stay up on the toes to maintain control and prevent the opponent from turning back into you.
This sequence ensures that by keeping the hip off the mat and applying pressure against the opponent's hip, the opponent is forced to turn away, allowing for an easier transition to side control with less resistance.
