Key principles
- · The choking pressure comes from the knife-edge of the inserting hand driving across the throat while the sleeve-gripping arm acts as the anchor behind the head.
- · Head positioning tight against the opponent's temple prevents them from creating space to escape.
- · Keeping heavy chest pressure and low hips denies the opponent the ability to bridge or shrimp out before the choke is secured.
- · The squeeze finishes by expanding both arms outward in opposite directions, like opening a book, rather than just pushing down.
- · Anticipate the opponent framing on your biceps by driving your weight forward and pinching your elbows tight to your body.
Execution
- 1 From mount, feed one hand behind the opponent's head and grip the inside of your own opposite sleeve with four fingers.
- 2 Keep your chest heavy on the opponent and your head low, pressed against the side of their face to control posture.
- 3 Slide the free hand, knife-edge or fist first, across the opponent's throat underneath your sleeve-gripping forearm.
- 4 Close the choking loop by driving the inserting hand across while pulling the sleeve grip toward you, expanding both arms in opposite directions.
- 5 Squeeze elbows together and drive hips forward to add pressure and prevent any late escape.
Common mistakes
- × Sitting upright to apply the choke gives the opponent space to bump, bridge, and escape or reverse the position.
- × Inserting the choking hand too deep past the neck results in a push across the face rather than a true strangle, losing finishing pressure.
- × Neglecting to secure the sleeve grip tightly before inserting the second hand telegraphs the attack and allows the opponent to defend early by blocking the wrist.
