Austin Baker

Born on August 9, 1994, in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, Austin Baker grew up moving across multiple locations within the state. From an early age, he channeled his athletic energy into American football, competing at the organized level from middle school through college with the Riverside City College Tigers. The sport forged his competitive identity over the better part of a decade, instilling the discipline and drive that would later define his approach to martial arts.

At age 20, Baker's football career reached its natural conclusion without a viable professional path ahead. Rather than stepping away from competition, he redirected that same intensity toward combat sports. A longtime fan of mixed martial arts, Baker recognized in MMA a new arena where his athleticism and competitive instincts could thrive — setting in motion a journey that would carry him far beyond the cage.

Baker's introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came through Gracie Barra Corona, where he trained under coach AJ Polder with the goal of building a grappling foundation for MMA. Over two years with Polder, Baker earned his blue and purple belts — but something unexpected emerged in the process. His passion for jiu-jitsu steadily overshadowed his ambitions in the cage.

Seeking a more demanding training environment, Baker transitioned as a purple belt to Gracie Barra Headquarters Academy, where he trained under Philipe Della Monica. His development as a grappler accelerated, and his growing reputation on the mat created an ironic obstacle for his MMA aspirations: with a record of 1-0-0, opponents at entry-level shows grew increasingly reluctant to face him, effectively stalling his progress in that arena.

With the path to MMA narrowing and his commitment to jiu-jitsu deepening, Baker made a decisive move in 2018, relocating to Arizona to join the expanding Gracie Barra squad led by Flávio Almeida. The environment proved to be the right fit, and Baker continued to evolve as both a competitor and practitioner under Almeida's leadership.

In January 2021, Baker took the definitive step of turning professional, leaving his position at a game shop to dedicate himself entirely to jiu-jitsu. Within days of making that commitment, he received his black belt promotion alongside teammates Thiago Aso and Lucas Norat — a milestone that marked not just a rank change, but the formal beginning of a new chapter in his athletic life.

Early Black Belt Success

Competing in the super-heavyweight division — Pesadíssimo, for athletes above 100.50 kg / 222.0 lbs — Baker wasted little time proving his black belt promotion was well earned. In the weeks immediately following his turn to professionalism in early 2021, he captured double gold at the 2021 IBJJF New Orleans Open, winning both the weight division and the absolute. The result announced his arrival at the top tier of IBJJF competition with authority.

Later that year, Baker sustained his momentum at the 2021 IBJJF Boise Open, taking first place in his weight class and reaching the absolute final. At the 2021 IBJJF American Nationals, he claimed silver in the weight category and bronze in the absolute, while also earning a third-place finish at the 2021 IBJJF American Nationals No-Gi — a result that underscored his adaptability across both gi and no-gi formats.

Colored Belt Foundation

Baker's black belt success is rooted in a strong competitive record at the lower ranks. As a brown belt, he won gold at the 2020 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship. As a purple belt, he reached the final of the 2018 IBJJF World Championship and earned a podium finish at the 2017 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Taken together, his résumé reflects a competitor who performed consistently at every stage of development before stepping into the sport's highest level.
