André Galvão was born on September 29, 1982, in São Sebastião, São Paulo, Brazil, and grew up in the Vale da Paraíba region. His martial arts journey began with judo before he transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the guidance of Luis Carlos Dagmar and Fernando Tererê.

In 2002, Galvão relocated to Rio de Janeiro to train under Osvaldo Alves — a move that immediately bore fruit. He captured his first world title as a blue belt that same year, opening what would become an extraordinary run through the colored belt divisions. Competing under Fernando Tererê's TT team — the Alliance splinter squad co-founded by Tererê and Eduardo Telles — Galvão established himself as one of the circuit's most dominant presences, winning double gold at both the IBJJF World Championship and the CBJJO World Cup across his purple and brown belt years. The bond forged with Tererê during that period ran deep; when asked in a 2009 Fightworks Podcast interview who the best person he had ever rolled with was, Galvão answered without hesitation: "The best? Man, for me, it's Terere."

It was within the TT environment that Galvão first crossed paths with Ramon Lemos, who had previously operated a Nova Uniao affiliate in São Paulo. When Tererê stepped away from teaching in 2004 due to personal difficulties, Galvão and Lemos moved together to Brasa, another team that had emerged from the Alliance split. Training under the Brasa banner, Galvão earned a silver medal at middleweight at the 2007 Mundials, then returned in 2008 to claim gold at middleweight alongside a bronze in the absolute division — results that announced him as a fully formed black belt competitor ready to compete at the sport's highest level.

In October 2008, André Galvão co-founded Atos Jiu Jitsu alongside Ramon Lemos and Gustavo Campos, known within the community as Guto. The three men shared strong Christian beliefs, and the team name they chose — Atos, the Portuguese word for "Acts" — was drawn directly from the Biblical Book of Acts, making faith a foundational element of the organization from its very first day.

Gustavo Campos brought a distinctive background to the partnership. He had earned his black belt in 2004, then moved to California in 2007 to train under Rickson Gracie, during which time he developed a close friendship with Kron Gracie. After returning to Brazil, financial constraints initially forced him to run his academy out of his mother's living room before he joined Galvão and Lemos to launch Atos in late 2008.

The new team wasted little time establishing itself at the highest level. Two of Lemos's students since childhood — brothers Rafael Mendes and Guilherme Mendes — became Atos's first black belts and secured the team its first Mundials black belt title. The Mendes brothers went on to become defining figures in the sport's technical evolution, popularizing the 50/50 guard and the berimbolo — positions that attracted significant debate from more traditional corners of the BJJ world — before establishing Art of Jiu Jitsu in Costa Mesa, California, which grew into one of the most recognized BJJ academies in the United States.

Building the San Diego Base

Galvão's connection to the United States traced back to 2005, when he visited San Diego with his then-partner Angelica. The trip carried a striking moment: caught in a house fire, Galvão lost all his belongings — yet his seminar earnings from a recent Utah trip and his passport were found unburnt inside a Bible. In 2010, he returned to San Diego permanently, establishing Atos San Diego while leaving Lemos to oversee the Atos Rio Claro academy in Brazil.

By 2013, the San Diego headquarters had attracted major American talent, most notably JT Torres and Keenan Cornelius, who ranked among the most promising candidates to extend the lineage of American male black belt IBJJF World Champions — a list that, as of a July 2014 article in Jiu-Jitsu Style, included BJ Penn, Robert Drysdale, and Rafael Lovato Jr..

The Women's Program and Broader Team Growth

The Atos women's program developed with equal ambition. Galvão's wife, Angelica, became a leading figure in that effort. After stepping away from competition between 2005 and 2010 following the birth of their daughter, she returned to training in November 2010 and won her purple belt division at the 2011 Mundials. In 2014, she secured a Mundials title at brown belt and received her black belt on the podium — a moment that captured the culture Atos had built around competitive excellence at every level.

MMA fighter Cris "Cyborg" also competed under the Atos banner during this period, winning the purple belt Mundials in 2011 — defeating Amanda Lucas in the final — and repeating as champion at the 2012 Mundials. As head coach and co-founder, Galvão guided Atos to numerous World Championship team titles and mentored athletes who became stars in their own right, including Tye Ruotolo and Kade Ruotolo, whom he helped develop from blue and purple belt prospects into ADCC and IBJJF gold medalists.

André Galvão's run through the IBJJF World Championship represents one of the most sustained competitive records in the sport's history. His black belt world titles came in 2005, 2008, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019 — six gold medals spread across more than a decade and a half of elite competition, a span that encompassed generational shifts in the sport's technical landscape.

Those six black belt titles followed a colored belt trajectory that was equally dominant. Galvão captured IBJJF World Championship gold as a blue belt in 2002, a purple belt in 2003, and a brown belt in 2004 — arriving at the black belt division already carrying three consecutive world titles. By the time he won his first black belt world gold in 2005, he had been a world champion at every preceding belt level.

Pan American and Major Title Record

His Pan American Championship record reflects similar longevity. Galvão accumulated 10 Pan American medals when counting weight and absolute divisions separately: gold in 2005, 2006, both the weight and absolute in 2008, 2011, 2013, both the weight and absolute in 2014, 2016, and 2017. Additional major titles across his career included three Abu Dhabi Pro victories (2012, 2013, and 2014), the CBJJO World Cup in 2006, the European Open in 2015, and the Ultimate Absolute NYC in 2011.

His submission-oriented approach was on full display at the 2015 European Open, where he posted 8 wins with 7 submissions on his way to the title — a performance that underscored the attacking intent behind a game built on relentless forward pressure and a deep finishing arsenal.

In 2022, the IBJJF inducted Galvão into its Hall of Fame, recognition that placed his competitive career among the sport's most decorated. Upon acceptance, he reflected on his journey "from a small town in São Paulo" to the Hall of Fame — a statement that framed the full arc of a career built from the ground up.

If the IBJJF World Championship defined Galvão's gi career, his ADCC record established him as one of the greatest no-gi competitors the sport has produced. He reached the podium at the 2007 ADCC World Championship with a bronze medal, then returned in 2009 to advance to the final. In 2011, he converted that momentum into an ADCC World Championship title, with the absolute final against Pablo Popovitch described at the time as "the most important match of the event."

What followed was arguably even more impressive: Galvão went on to win the ADCC Superfight — the open-class championship contested between successive cycles — four consecutive times, in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019. A March 2017 interview with Gracie Magazine described him as supercampeão do ADCC and noted a scheduled superfight that year against Claudio Calasans in Finland, reflecting just how central to the ADCC identity Galvão had become.

The rivalry that ultimately closed that chapter of his ADCC career built long before the two competitors shared the mat. A backstage incident at the 2021 ADCC World Championship in which Gordon Ryan slapped Galvão generated widespread attention and transformed what might have been a straightforward superfight into one of the most anticipated matchups submission grappling had seen in years. When the two finally met at the 2022 ADCC World Championship, Ryan won — ending Galvão's reign as superfight champion. In the aftermath, Galvão addressed his students directly, accepting the result with composure and turning his attention to the legacy he had constructed over more than a decade at the top of the sport.

Galvão's approach to competition preparation is as deliberate and structured as his record suggests. He co-authored the book Drill to Win, a training manual that codifies the methodology he has applied throughout his career: repetition-based learning, rigorous physical conditioning, and a mindset of continuous refinement. The Atos training culture reflects these priorities directly, with drilling and conditioning forming the spine of daily sessions at the San Diego headquarters.

His submission-seeking approach has been a consistent thread across his career. The 2015 European Open campaign — 8 wins with 7 submissions — offered a concentrated example of what his game looks like at its most efficient: forward pressure, constant threat of finish, and very little time afforded to opponents to establish their own rhythms.

Hydration, Recovery, and Competition Protocols

In a March 2017 interview with Gracie Magazine, Galvão shared his competition hydration protocol in precise detail. He brings two bottles to every competition: one filled with pure water and a second containing a high-carbohydrate drink with a 4:1 carbohydrate-to-protein ratio, which he favors over isotonic drinks due to their sugar composition. He recommends drinking two to three liters after training, advises against waiting for thirst before drinking, and encourages athletes to keep a garrafa amiga — a "friendly bottle" — nearby for regular sips throughout a session. For athletes who struggle to consume enough plain water, he recommends chilled green tea with half a lemon diluted with double the amount of water, prepared without sugar or sweeteners. He increases amino acid intake during competition periods in response to elevated adrenaline and energy expenditure, and identifies ice as an essential recovery tool, calling water and ice "the best friends of a fighter."

His philosophical framing of hydration revealed the way faith and practice intertwine in his thinking. In the same interview, he offered the observation in Portuguese: "Deus fez a água sem cheiro, sem gosto, sem forma e sem cor para todo mundo gostar dela" — "God made water without smell, taste, form, or color so that everyone would like it." A second remark from the conversation was equally direct: "Água nunca faz mal a ninguém, quanto mais beber melhor" — "Water never hurts anyone; the more you drink the better."

Beyond the gym floor, Galvão has hosted dedicated training camps at Atos HQ — including ADCC-specific preparation camps — and produces instructional content centered on the drilling methodology that underpins Atos Jiu Jitsu's competitive identity.

Between 2008 and 2010, Galvão stepped into mixed martial arts competition, compiling a professional record of five wins and two losses before stepping away from the cage entirely. The MMA stint overlapped with the early period of Atos's formation, and once he committed fully to building the team and his BJJ career, he declined further MMA opportunities without apparent ambivalence.

The competitive drive that had carried him through MMA found its outlet in the leadership of Atos — organizing training camps, developing events, and building coaching relationships with athletes across ability levels. He channeled the same intensity into developing competitors, from teenage prospects to established black belt champions, that he had previously directed at opponents inside the cage.

In 2020, Galvão was awarded his 5th degree black belt, marking another milestone in a career that continued to evolve. He has remained an active presence on the mats, training alongside his students rather than limiting himself to observation — a reflection of the training culture he has worked to build and sustain at Atos HQ.

Faith has been a defining current in André Galvão's life well beyond the choice of the Atos team name. A devout Christian, he regularly attributes his discipline, competitive focus, and sense of purpose to his religious beliefs — a dimension of his biography he has spoken about openly and consistently throughout his career.

The story of his first visit to San Diego in 2005 with Angelica has become one of the more vivid anecdotes attached to his biography. Caught in a house fire during that trip, he lost all his clothes and possessions — but his seminar earnings and his passport were recovered unburnt from inside a Bible, a detail he has returned to in interviews as emblematic of the faith that guides him.

Angelica Galvão, who became his wife, has been central to both the personal and professional dimensions of what Atos became. Their daughter Sarah Galvão followed a path into jiu-jitsu competition and instruction, eventually joining the Atos coaching staff. The family's involvement has made Atos, in many respects, a family enterprise from its earliest days.

Galvão goes by the nickname "Deco" within the BJJ community. His personal bonds with training partners and mentors have remained a consistent theme in how he discusses his career — none more telling than his answer in that 2009 Fightworks Podcast interview, when he named Fernando Tererê as the best person he had ever rolled with, a nod that spoke to the depth of that formative competitive relationship.

When Galvão announced his return to teaching at Atos HQ in March 2026, he framed the statement in explicitly faith-based language: "For more than 30 years, I have dedicated my life teaching jiu-jitsu, mentoring students, and helping families on and off the mats. I came to the United States with a purpose within, and I believe, no doubt, that God placed this in our heart, to serve people, to teach, and to build lives through jiu-jitsu and through the Word of God, our faith in Jesus Christ."

On February 1 and 2, 2026, former Atos Jiu Jitsu trainee Alexa Herse publicly alleged a pattern of inappropriate conduct by Galvão over six months during her time training at Atos. Herse, who had trained at the academy since childhood, described incidents of inappropriate touching during training sessions, repeated comments about her body and appearance, and an incident in which Galvão licked her ear. She stated she had filed a report with local law enforcement and announced she was ending her association with the team. Herse also alleged that Angelica Galvão had discouraged her from speaking out, quoting her as saying: "Not only did she do nothing about it, she told me not to say anything and told me that if it's wrong, you have to at least act like it's right. And don't bite the hand that feeds you."

On February 1, 2026, Galvão issued a written statement categorically denying the allegations, describing them as "false rumors" and asserting they originated from someone with "a personal vendetta due to financial cuts and administrative decisions." He emphasized that legal steps were being taken and pointed to academy safety protocols.

On February 2, 2026, the IBJJF issued a public statement outlining its existing protocols — SafeSport certification requirements for black belts seeking certificates or degree renewals, and mandatory background checks for black belts responsible for a gym or association and their direct assistant coaches — and stated it was prioritizing and monitoring the reports that had emerged over the prior weekend.

Organizational Separation and Affiliation Departures

On February 4, 2026, Atos Jiu-Jitsu HQ issued a statement announcing the immediate and indefinite separation of both André and Angelica Galvão from all positions within the organization — including teaching, administrative, and operational roles — while indicating it was engaging a third party to investigate the allegations. The independence of this action was questioned within the community: the account posting the statement displayed André's profile image at the time of publication, and California Secretary of State records, as reported by BJJDoc, listed André as the sole registered agent for Atos Jiu Jitsu LLC — an entity reported as delinquent on required filings since 2016 and suspended since 2017. The same report noted that André also operates Galvao Jiu Jitsu LLC, Galvao Jiu Jitsu 2 LLC, and Galvao Jiu Jitsu 3 LLC as active entities with him as agent. On the night of February 3, 2026, approximately 300 Instagram posts were removed from the Atos HQ account.

Also on February 4, 2026, Keenan Cornelius indicated in a video that, based on conversations with people close to the matter, legal proceedings were likely forthcoming.

The affiliation departures that followed proved substantial in both number and profile. Among those who moved on from Atos in the weeks following the allegations were JT Torres, Bruno Frazatto, Dom Bell, Lucas Pinheiro, Gustavo Batista, Kaynan Duarte, Josh Hinger, Andy Murasaki, and Lucas Barbosa. Atos Northwest formally severed its affiliation after more than ten years under the Atos banner. Gustavo Batista stated that he and others did not agree with or condone actions taken by team leadership and that remaining had become "unsustainable." Sponsors including Kingz were reported to be ending associations in real time.

Not all affiliates departed. Atos Zurich, led by head instructor Jonathas Eliaquim, publicly expressed support for the Galvão family on February 5, 2026. Eliaquim posted messages including: "I will stand by the Galvão family and not turn my back on them" and "Andre Galvao is an incredible champion, dedicated instructor, and man of integrity. These unfounded rumors do not define him or his legacy." The posts drew immediate online backlash, prompting Eliaquim to disable comments.

Restructuring at Atos HQ

Following the organizational changes, Sarah Galvão was listed as head coach at Atos HQ alongside coaches Michael Perez and Orlando Samson, replacing a previous roster that had featured both André and Angelica Galvão. At Polaris 36 in Croydon, England, Sarah Galvão defeated Libby Genge by submission, with the Atos name absent from the broadcast at that event.

On March 12, 2026 — approximately five weeks after his and Angelica's separation from their leadership positions — André Galvão announced via his official Instagram account that he was returning to the mats as head coach at Atos HQ. In the video, he stated he would be teaching Monday through Friday, and sometimes Saturdays, from 6 a.m. through 8 p.m., and invited people to visit him at the academy. He also referenced ownership of a second gym in Beaumont, California, and characterized recent organizational changes at Atos as routine policy corrections that had been needed for years. Regarding the Herse allegations, he stated they were false and retaliatory, and said he had proactively contacted the San Diego Police Department to offer his cooperation: "They never called me, they never contacted me. And I went there to make sure that they know that I'm very clear on supporting and helping them, and I'm ready to assist in any way possible." He added: "I'm choosing not to attack anyone right now, or argue online, or create more division inside the community. I trust that the truth will come forward through the proper time and through the proper process."

As of September 26, 2026, Galvão's name appeared on the registration list for the Master 3 heavyweight division at the IBJJF No-Gi Pan American Championship — a division that already had 13 athletes registered at that date — signaling his intention to return to active competition. In connection with that announcement, he reiterated his position on law enforcement cooperation: "I have been fully willing to cooperate with law enforcement and with all jiu-jitsu organizations in this matter. In fact, I already reached out to the San Diego Police Department first. They never called me, they never contacted me. And I went there to make sure that they know that I'm very clear on supporting and helping them."
