In 2002, seeking a higher level of training, Galvão relocated to Rio de Janeiro to work under Osvaldo Alves — a move that yielded immediate results: he claimed gold at the blue belt IBJJF World Championship that same year. The discipline forged through judo, the technical education provided by his early BJJ coaches, and a Christian faith that remained central to his personal identity all combined to shape the competitive and personal character that defined everything that followed.

Following his blue belt world title, Galvão's trajectory through the colored belt ranks stood as one of the most dominant of his generation. He joined Fernando Tererê's team TT — the Alliance splinter-team formed by Tererê and Eduardo Telles — where he emerged as a standout competitor, winning double gold medals at both the IBJJF World Championship and the CBJJO World Cup. Across his colored belt years, Galvão's IBJJF World Championship record was flawless: gold at blue belt in 2002, purple belt in 2003, and brown belt in 2004. In 2010, Galvão made San Diego his permanent base, establishing Atos San Diego and leaving Ramon Lemos in charge of the Atos Rio Claro academy in Brazil. Angelica Galvão has been a central figure in the Atos organization both as a competitor and as a partner in shaping the academy's culture and day-to-day operations. After a competitive lay-off from 2005 to 2010 following the birth of their daughter, she returned to training in November 2010 and demonstrated an immediate return to form, winning her purple belt division at the IBJJF World Championship in 2011. In 2014, she secured a Mundials title at brown belt and received her black belt on the podium — a moment celebrated widely within the Atos community as emblematic of the academy's family-centered identity.

The Atos women's competition program also benefitted from the affiliation of MMA fighter Cris Cyborg, who competed in jiu-jitsu representing the team and won consecutive purple belt Mundials titles in 2011 and 2012. Her 2011 IBJJF World Championship run included a victory over Amanda Lucas in the final — a result that drew considerable attention given Cyborg's profile in combat sports and underscored the breadth of talent competing under the Atos banner.

Between approximately 2008 and 2010, Galvão pursued a professional mixed martial arts career alongside his BJJ competition schedule, retiring from cage fighting with a record of five wins and two losses. The period demonstrated the full scope of his athletic ability — his MMA career overlapping with some of his most prolific years as a grappling competitor. Following his retirement from MMA, he declined further pursuits in cage fighting to concentrate fully on BJJ competition and the development of Atos Jiu Jitsu. On February 1–2, 2026, former Atos trainee Alexa Herse — who had trained at Atos since childhood — publicly alleged a pattern of inappropriate conduct by Galvão spanning approximately six months. Her allegations included inappropriate touching during training sessions, repeated comments about her body and appearance, and one incident involving unwanted physical contact. Herse stated she had filed a report with local law enforcement and announced she was no longer associated with Atos. She also alleged that Angelica Galvão had discouraged her from speaking out, stating that Angelica told her: "Not only did she do nothing about it, she told me not to say anything and told me that if it's wrong, you have to at least act like it's right. And don't bite the hand that feeds you."

On February 1, 2026, Galvão issued a written statement categorically denying the allegations, describing them as "false rumors" originating from "someone who recently left ATOS" with "a personal vendetta due to financial cuts and administrative decisions." He emphasized planned legal steps and outlined existing academy safety protocols.

On February 2, 2026, the IBJJF issued a public statement outlining its existing SafeSport certification requirements for black belts and mandatory background checks for gym-responsible black belts and their direct assistant coaches, condemning abusive behavior, and stating it was prioritizing and monitoring the reports that had emerged over that weekend.

On February 4, 2026, Atos Jiu Jitsu HQ issued a statement announcing that André and Angelica Galvão had been immediately and indefinitely separated from all positions within the organization — teaching, administrative, and operational — while a third-party investigation was being engaged. Community members and observers questioned the independence of this step, noting that the account posting the statement displayed André's profile image and that California Secretary of State records listed André as the sole registered agent for Atos Jiu Jitsu LLC. Reporting by BJJDoc further noted that Atos Jiu Jitsu LLC had been delinquent on required filings since 2016 and suspended since 2017, with informational updates in 2025, and that André also operated Galvao Jiu Jitsu LLC, Galvao Jiu Jitsu 2 LLC, and Galvao Jiu Jitsu 3 LLC as active entities with him listed as agent. The Atos HQ Instagram account removed close to 300 posts on the night of February 3, 2026.

The days that followed brought a wave of notable departures from the team. JT Torres confirmed his team would be leaving Atos, joining earlier departures that included Bruno Frazatto. Subsequently, Dom Bell, Lucas Pinheiro, and Gustavo Batista also publicly announced their departures; Batista stated that he and others did not agree with or condone the conduct of team leadership and that remaining had become "unsustainable." Approximately five weeks after he and Angelica stepped down from their leadership positions, André Galvão announced via a video posted to his official Instagram account on March 12, 2026, that he was returning to the mats as head coach at Atos Jiu-Jitsu HQ in San Diego. The video was framed explicitly around his Christian faith and his sense of purpose in the United States. He stated: "For more than 30 years, I have dedicated my life teaching jiu-jitsu, mentoring students, and helping families on and off the mats. I came to the United States with a purpose within, and I believe, no doubt, that God placed this in our heart, to serve people, to teach, and to build lives through jiu-jitsu and through the Word of God, our faith in Jesus Christ."

Galvão announced he would be teaching at Atos HQ Monday through Friday — and sometimes Saturday — from 6 a.m. through 8 p.m., and noted ownership of a second gym in Beaumont, California. He characterized the organizational changes at Atos during the preceding weeks as routine policy corrections that had been needed for years, and reiterated that the allegations made by Alexa Herse were false and retaliatory. He stated that he had proactively contacted the San Diego Police Department rather than waiting to be approached, positioning this as evidence of his willingness to cooperate with law enforcement. On the matter of his public conduct in the wake of the controversy, he said: "I'm choosing not to attack anyone right now, or argue online, or create more division inside the community. I trust that the truth will come forward through the proper time and through the proper process."

Commentary at the time characterized the return as a reversal of reputational quarantine on terms set by Galvão himself. Observers noted that the video did not directly address or deny the specific allegations made against him.
