Luciana Mota

Luciana Mota Castelo Branco was born in May 1990 in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state in Brazil — a city not traditionally associated with combat sports, but one that would serve as the launching point for a remarkable athletic journey. Drawn to martial arts from an early age, she persuaded her parents to enroll her in a local judo club at nine years old. The experience proved short-lived; the academy had very few children and no other girls training, leaving Luciana without the competitive environment she needed to develop.

Following that brief encounter with judo, Luciana channeled her competitive drive into the weight room. She committed seriously to weightlifting and competitive bodybuilding, building a disciplined athletic foundation that would later translate directly onto the mats. It was during this period, in 2012, that she crossed paths with Diego Castelo Branco at the gym — already a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the man who would become both her husband and most influential coach. Despite his repeated invitations to try a class, Luciana did not step onto the mats until January 2015.

In those early months, jiu-jitsu was a hobby rather than a vocation. Luciana trained twice per week in an all-female class, balancing mat time with her weightlifting routine and a full-time career as an accountant. There was little indication at that stage of what was to come.

What began as a casual twice-weekly commitment quickly revealed itself to be something far more serious. Within just 11 months of starting training, Luciana earned her blue belt — a timeline that reflected both her natural athleticism and the quality of instruction provided by Diego Castelo Branco. She moved from the all-female beginner class to national-level tournaments, consistently performing well above expectations.

The defining moment in Luciana's career came within her first two competitions, when Castelo Branco sat down with her and articulated the potential he saw in her as a grappler. That conversation proved transformative. Luciana left her accounting career and committed entirely to jiu-jitsu — a leap of faith vindicated many times over. Under Castelo Branco's focused instruction, she established herself as one of the top colored belt competitors on the Brazilian circuit, earning her purple belt promotion in October 2018.

Her purple belt years stand among the most decorated of her career. During the 2019–2020 period, Luciana climbed to the number one IBJJF ranking in her division at purple belt, capping a dominant run that included Pan Championship and No-Gi World Championship gold. On December 14, 2021, under the guidance of both Castelo Branco and Johnny Faria, she received her black belt promotion — completing the journey from complete beginner to the sport's highest rank in under seven years.

In pursuit of elite international competition and world-class training environments, Luciana and Diego relocated to the United States around 2017. Their first destination was Las Vegas, where they joined Zenith Jiu-Jitsu headquarters under Robert Drysdale, one of the sport's most respected black belts and coaches. Training at Zenith gave Luciana direct access to the highly competitive North American IBJJF circuit and the caliber of training partners required to sharpen her game.

The couple later transitioned to Alliance San Diego, where Luciana began training under Johnny Faria, a seasoned coach with an established record of developing world-class competitors. The combined influence of Faria and Castelo Branco proved a powerful force — one providing technical refinement, the other the competitive mindset needed to perform at the highest level. Throughout her years based in the United States, she continued accumulating titles at blue, purple, and brown belt, building the deep competitive résumé that would underpin her black belt career.

Luciana's black belt career has validated every expectation that Diego Castelo Branco identified in her years earlier. Promoted on December 14, 2021, she wasted no time announcing herself at the sport's elite level — reaching the final of the IBJJF World Championships in 2022 and finishing as runner-up, her highest black belt result at the Worlds to date and a performance that confirmed her standing among the best in the Meio Pesado division (74 kg / 175 lbs). She represents the United States on the international stage.

The progression continued into the 2022–2023 season, during which Luciana ranked among the top ten black belts in the IBJJF's global standings, placing ninth overall. The ranking reflected consistent results across multiple high-level events and underscored the depth of a black belt campaign still in its formative stages.
