As Monteiro's commitment to jiu-jitsu deepened, he sought a higher level of training and joined Kimura/Nova União, one of the most decorated and respected teams in Northeastern Brazil. The club had produced a remarkable roster of elite athletes, including Jussier 'Formiga', Renan 'Barão', Kiki Melo, Bruno 'Alminha', and Marcelo 'Caneta' Pinheiro. Under the tutelage of team founder and head coach Jair Lourenço, Monteiro's development accelerated rapidly, and he quickly established himself as one of the most feared competitors across the Northeastern region.
Colored Belt Excellence
Monteiro's colored belt campaign was nothing short of exceptional. At blue belt, he claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open in 2013 and topped the podium at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals that same year, while a runner-up finish at the IBJJF World Championship in 2012 as a blue belt juvenile signaled his potential on the global stage. At purple belt, he captured the IBJJF Pan Championship title in 2015 and added gold at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro that same year, along with the IBJJF/USBJJF American Nationals in 2014. His brown belt campaign proved equally dominant, culminating in a gold medal at the 2016 IBJJF World Championship — one of the sport's most prestigious titles — alongside another Pan Championship gold and a runner-up finish at the Abu Dhabi Pro in 2016.
During his colored belt years, Monteiro began traveling to the United States to compete in premier BJJ events, a decision that broadened both his competitive résumé and his professional network. In the USA, he connected with Gustavo Dantas, a prominent figure in the sport renowned for his mental coaching program and his track record of developing high-level athletes. Dantas's guidance proved instrumental in shaping Monteiro's psychological approach to competition — a dimension that would prove just as critical as his technical arsenal. On November 1, 2016, Horlando Monteiro received his black belt in a ceremony led by three central figures in his journey: Jair Lourenço, Gustavo Dantas, and Marcelo 'Caneta' Pinheiro.
