Victor Hugo began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in Brazil under coach Ricardo Costa at Day By Day Academy. His exceptional talent quickly emerged when he dominated the purple belt division at the IBJJF World Championships, securing double gold. This standout performance earned Hugo a full scholarship in 2016 to train at the prestigious University of Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego, California, under legendary competitors Saulo Ribeiro and Xande Ribeiro.

Upon relocating to the United States, Victor Hugo became the premier student and protégé of Rafael Lovato Jr.. He later moved to Oklahoma City to train full-time at Lovato's academy, refining his technical skills and embracing the Bushido philosophy instilled by his mentors. Hugo regularly teaches seminars alongside Lovato and actively contributes to expanding the affiliate schools of Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu throughout the United States and Brazil.

In 2023, Victor Hugo achieved one of the rarest accomplishments in gi jiu-jitsu history by capturing double gold at the 2023 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. He secured both the ultra-heavyweight and absolute black belt titles, submitting his opponents in both finals. This remarkable feat marked Hugo as the first ultra-heavyweight competitor in many years to win the absolute final by submission. Reflecting on his journey from an unathletic youth to world champion, Hugo emphasized the importance of technique, determination, and heart over natural athleticism.

Despite his imposing 6’4” (~193 cm), 260+ lb frame, Victor Hugo is renowned for his dynamic and technical guard game. He specializes in footlocks and triangles from the 50/50 and spider guard positions, frequently surprising elite opponents with unexpected flying triangles and swift leglock entries. Hugo's seamless transitions between guard attacks and submissions have established him as one of the most feared guard players among heavyweight competitors.
