Vinicius Magalhães was born on July 2, 1984, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Growing up in the Bairro de Olaria neighborhood, he began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Jair Reis at a local gym. Soon after, he transitioned to the Strauch Academy, where he trained under Germano Junior and earned his blue belt in 1999.

After receiving his blue belt, Vinny joined Gracie Tijuca, training under renowned instructor Vinicius Aieta. At Gracie Tijuca, he trained alongside legendary competitor Saulo Ribeiro, significantly refining his aggressive, submission-oriented style. This formative period laid the groundwork for his distinctive approach to competition.

Vinny Magalhães earned his black belt in an extraordinary fashion at the 2005 IBJJF World Championship. After dominating the brown belt Super Pesado division—submitting all opponents, including Rodrigo Cavaca—he advanced to the absolute division final. His instructor, Vinicius Aieta, had wagered with Royler Gracie that if Vinny secured a submission victory in the final, he would immediately receive his black belt. Rising to the challenge, Vinny swiftly submitted Gabriel Kitobert via armbar in just one minute, earning his black belt on the podium from both Aieta and Royler Gracie.

In 2004, Vinny relocated to the United States, initially coaching at Cesar Gracie's academy. Despite arriving without English proficiency, he quickly adapted and soon joined the prestigious MMA team Team Quest, led by MMA legends Dan Henderson and Matt Lindland. This pivotal move significantly expanded his exposure and opportunities within the mixed martial arts community.

Vinny Magalhães gained mainstream recognition through his participation in The Ultimate Fighter reality show. Recommended directly by Dan Henderson to UFC president Dana White, Vinny entered the competition without trials. Throughout the show, he demonstrated exceptional grappling skills, advancing to the finals against Ryan Bader, where he ultimately lost by TKO. Despite his grappling prowess, limited striking experience posed challenges in his subsequent UFC career, culminating in his release following a decision loss to Eliot Marshall.

Following his UFC departure, Vinny relocated to Las Vegas to rejuvenate his MMA career. There, he connected with new training partners and coaches, revitalizing his competitive trajectory. In 2025, he opened Oasis Jiu-Jitsu, a 12,000-square-foot training facility in Las Vegas, establishing it as his primary base for coaching, training, and seminars.

Vinny Magalhães is renowned for his exceptional flexibility and resilience, particularly in leglock exchanges. His refusal to tap to a heel hook from Craig Jones in 2020—resulting in a spiral fracture to his fibula—highlighted his extraordinary toughness. In MMA competition, Vinny has executed rare and advanced submissions, including a twister against Rodrigo Artilheiro and a mounted gogoplata choke against Viktor Nemkov to capture the M-1 Global light-heavyweight title. Additionally, he is among the select few grapplers to have defeated Gordon Ryan in a no-gi superfight.

Vinny Magalhães achieved significant success at the prestigious ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, capturing gold in the +99 kg division in 2011. He also secured podium finishes in 2009 and 2015. In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the sport, Vinny was inducted into the ADCC Hall of Fame in 2024, cementing his legacy as one of submission grappling's elite competitors.
