Perttu Tepponen was born on February 20, 1992, in Tampere, Finland — a city with a deep tradition of ice sports and team athletics. Like many Finnish youth, Tepponen grew up shaped by the country's dominant sporting culture, competing in both football and ice hockey before gravitating toward combat sports. At 16, he took up weightlifting, building the physical foundation that would later translate directly into competitive grappling.

At 18, he took his first steps into combat sports by joining a kickboxing and MMA academy, with mixed martial arts as his initial goal. The pivotal shift toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came during his mandatory Finnish military service, where he was granted special training leave to continue his athletic development. That period of structured discipline — simultaneously military and martial — proved the turning point that redirected his competitive ambitions entirely toward grappling.

Building a Foundation: Blue and Brown Belt Years

Tepponen's commitment to BJJ took clear shape at the 2014 IBJJF European Open, where he earned a silver medal as a blue belt — a result that confirmed his natural aptitude for the sport and sharpened his focus on it. Training under Tero Pyylampi and Pedro Duarte at Hilti BJJ - TJJK, he developed into one of Finland's most accomplished grapplers across both gi and no-gi formats.

His brown belt years were defined by sustained excellence on the international stage. In 2015, he claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open NoGi, and in 2016 he swept the SBJJL Finnish Open in both gi and no-gi divisions. His 2017 brown belt season proved particularly productive: he secured both a silver and a bronze at the IBJJF World Championship across divisions, with additional podium finishes at the IBJJF European Open NoGi and the IBJJF Rome Open. That run of consistent performances made a compelling case for his readiness at the sport's highest level.

Black Belt Promotion and Immediate Impact

In October 2017, Tero Pyylampi and Pedro Duarte promoted Tepponen to black belt, formally recognizing his technical mastery and competitive record. The transition proved seamless: in 2018, he won the ADCC European Trials — a result that announced his arrival as an elite no-gi competitor and secured him a place at the prestigious ADCC World Championship.

Tepponen competes in the Super Pesado division at 100.50 kg / 222.0 lbs and is recognized as one of the top European BJJ competitors of his generation. His record spans multiple formats and major events, reflecting a well-rounded game built to perform in both the gi and no-gi arenas.
