Vinícius “Trator” Ferreira Gazola

Vinícius Ferreira was born on June 21, 1997, in Franca, a municipality in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. At 12 years old, he faced a weight-management challenge that would inadvertently set him on the path to becoming one of his generation's most decorated grapplers. Seeking structure and discipline, he enrolled in a boxing gym — a commitment he maintained for nearly four years.

Two years into boxing, Ferreira added Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to his training regimen in a continued effort to manage his weight. His first jiu-jitsu class took place in March 2010 under coach Paulo "Índio", marking the start of a competitive career of remarkable depth. Just four months after stepping onto the mats, Ferreira entered his first tournament and finished 2nd at a local event. Rather than discouraging him, the result ignited an enduring hunger for competition. From that point forward, he embraced a training and competition routine that had him competing virtually every weekend, year-round, for several years running.

Six months into his training with Paulo "Índio", Ferreira made a deliberate move to accelerate his development, transferring to the gym of coach Edson Ferreira — Paulo Índio's own instructor — where the caliber of available training partners was considerably higher. Under Edson Ferreira's guidance, Vinícius earned his orange, green, blue, and purple belts, each grade a reflection of his rapid technical growth and relentless competitive output.

The Alliance Scholarship

By age 17, Ferreira had accumulated over 160 gold medals at the colored belt level — an extraordinary figure by any measure. Yet despite that success, he found himself on the verge of walking away from the sport, unable to identify a viable professional path in jiu-jitsu. In a calculated final effort to remain in the game, Ferreira and his coach sent a CV directly to Fábio Gurgel, the leader of Alliance in São Paulo, requesting a scholarship at the renowned academy.

The timing proved fortuitous. Gurgel was in the early stages of a project designed to support rising BJJ talent, and in December 2015, following a sparring audition, Vinícius was accepted into the program — one of the first athletes enrolled under the Alliance scholarship initiative. The arrangement provided him with food, shelter, and access to elite-level coaching and training partners, supplying the infrastructure necessary to compete at the sport's highest levels.

After nearly three years competing under the Alliance banner and accumulating a series of significant titles, Vinícius Ferreira received his black belt on September 4, 2018, promoted by coaches Michael Langhi and Fábio Gurgel.

Ferreira's colored belt career stands as one of the most decorated in recent IBJJF history, spanning multiple world titles across both gi and no-gi formats before he reached his twenties.

Purple Belt

At purple belt, Ferreira established himself as a dominant force on the international circuit. He captured the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in both 2015 and 2016, the IBJJF World Championship (gi) in 2016, the IBJJF Pans Championship in 2016, and the IBJJF South American Championship that same year — a concentrated run of results that signaled the arrival of a generational talent.

Brown Belt

The transition to brown belt brought no slowdown. Ferreira claimed back-to-back IBJJF World No-Gi Championship titles in 2017 and 2018, complemented by the IBJJF World Championship in gi in 2017. He added the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2018 and captured gold at the IBJJF Rome Open the same year. The season was not without near-misses — a 2nd place at the IBJJF Pans Championship in 2017 and a 3rd place at the IBJJF World Championship in 2018 underscored the competitive intensity at the top level — but the cumulative record was exceptional. By the time Ferreira received his black belt, he had constructed a colored belt résumé that established him as one of the most accomplished competitors of his era across both disciplines.

Ferreira wasted no time asserting himself among the elite upon receiving his black belt in September 2018. Before the year was out, he claimed the CBJJ Brazilian No-Gi Nationals title and won gold at the IBJJF São Paulo Open in both the weight category and the absolute division — an emphatic opening statement at the sport's highest level.

2019: A Defining Season

The 2019 season proved to be the most significant of his black belt career to that point. Ferreira added the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi title and the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals to his record, along with a double at the CBJJ South Brazilian Championship, winning both the weight division and the absolute. The defining moment of the year, however, came at the 2019 ADCC World Championship, where Ferreira navigated the bracket all the way to the final, ultimately finishing as runner-up — a landmark result for an athlete fewer than two years into his black belt career. The performance announced him as a genuine force in submission grappling at the world level, reflecting the no-gi credentials he had developed since his earliest days as a colored belt.

Sustained Elite Competition

Ferreira continued to compete at the highest levels in subsequent years. In 2022, he reached the final of the IBJJF European Open, finishing 2nd, and earned a 3rd place result at the IBJJF Pan Championship — results that confirmed his sustained presence among the sport's elite. Competing in the Super-Heavyweight division at 100.50 kg / 222.0 lbs, Ferreira demonstrates consistent proficiency across both gi and no-gi competition throughout his black belt career, a versatility rooted in the parallel development of both skill sets that began during his earliest years on the mats in Franca.
