Augusto Mendes was born on March 3, 1983, in Brazil. His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey began in 1997 at the Kioto gym in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, under the guidance of professors Alvaro and Krauss Mansor, with direct supervision from Master Francisco Mansor. Encouraged by his brother, Bruno Mendes, Augusto quickly embraced the art, laying the groundwork for his future accomplishments.

Demonstrating exceptional talent early on, Mendes captured his first world title as a juvenile blue belt in 2000. His consistent dedication and technical prowess led to his promotion to black belt in December 2004 by Master Francisco Mansor.

After earning his black belt, Mendes co-founded Renovação BJJ alongside his brother Bruno Mendes. In 2008, they expanded their vision by establishing the Soul Fighters Association. Under their leadership, Soul Fighters rapidly evolved into an international network, boasting over 1,000 students and more than 20 affiliate academies worldwide. Mendes serves as the head coach at Soul Fighters HQ in Tempe, Arizona, where he continues to develop and mentor the next generation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes.

Mendes made a significant impact at the prestigious ADCC World Championship, earning a bronze medal in 2015. He reached the pinnacle of submission grappling competition by winning the 66kg division at the 2019 ADCC World Championship. His tactical approach, precise guard play, and relentless submission attacks solidified his status among the elite grapplers of his generation.

Expanding his competitive horizons, Mendes transitioned into mixed martial arts, debuting in the UFC in 2016. Beyond his own fighting career, he has become a highly respected MMA grappling coach, notably refining the grappling skills of UFC champion Sean O'Malley. Mendes actively coaches and corners MMA fighters, leveraging his extensive grappling knowledge to enhance their ground game and overall performance.

In addition to competing and coaching, Mendes is recognized for his significant contributions as a referee within the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. Certified by the CBJJ (Confederação Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu), he regularly officiates major IBJJF events. Mendes is respected for his deep understanding of the sport, clear decision-making, and commitment to fair officiating.

In 2021, Mendes retired from elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition following a victory at BJJ Stars 7. Although no longer actively competing, he remains deeply involved in the sport through coaching, conducting seminars, and leading his academy. Mendes continues to inspire and influence the next generation of competitors, sharing his tactical insights, technical expertise, and passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
