Felipe Costa was born on September 17, 1978, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Drawn to martial arts from an early age by a genuine desire for self-defense, he took his first steps onto the mats at a local jiu-jitsu academy in Rio de Janeiro in 1991 — the beginning of one of the most distinctive journeys in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history.

What makes Costa's development particularly notable is the consistency of his institutional home: he trained at the same academy from white belt through black belt, guided by several different instructors across those years. Among them, Rodrigo Medeiros — widely known as "Comprido" — emerged as his most pivotal mentor. In 2002, Comprido formally promoted Costa to black belt, setting the stage for a competitive career that would defy every conventional expectation.

Felipe Costa's rise to the top of competitive jiu-jitsu stands as one of the sport's most compelling underdog stories. Throughout his colored belt career, he never placed on the podium of a major competition — not at the Mundials, the Pan American Championship, or the Europeans. For most athletes, such a record signals a ceiling. For Costa, it was simply the prologue.

Just one year after receiving his black belt from Rodrigo Medeiros, Costa shocked the grappling world by winning the IBJJF World Championship in 2003 in the roosterweight division (Peso Galo, 57.5 kg / 126.5 lbs).
